So, funny story guys.
I was going through my inbox and I realized that no one sent me suggestions for new types of instruments they'd like to see! We talked about this at the April 10th meeting this year, and while some suggestions were thrown out, nobody emailed me with any like I asked.
I got kind of sad.
But, I'm nice so I'll still take suggestions for instruments you'd like to see that we don't have. Otherwise it's going to end up being stuff I want, which might not be stuff YOU want.
A good place to start is Elanthipedia or songbooks, which list out instruments for each instrument type. If you don't see it there, it doesn't mean we CAN'T, but I am a bit limited in what I can add, so bear that in mind.
I'll even link them, because hey -- I'm nice!

Please EMAIL me (DR-EVIKE@PLAY.NET) the suggestions, so I have them in a handy dandy place!

I'm sort of confused. You refer to the list of instruments and invite us to suggest things we don't have. But then you say:
>If you don't see it there, it doesn't mean we CAN'T, but I am a bit limited in what I can add, so bear that in mind.
So are you saying you'd like suggestions of more variety of the base instruments on the lists or are you looking for completely new instruments which are not on the lists?

Instruments that are on the list, that we don't have.
If its an instrument that isn't on the list, it does not mean I cannot make it necessarily but using the list to pick things that have not been made in-game yet is basically using pre-existing information.
I hope that seems more clear?

I honestly haven't heard of half of those stringed instruments. I think most of the winds/percussion instruments have been around in some form or another, although I couldn't tell you where to find many of them.
My only request for instruments is for something that teaches better/is more difficult than bagpipes. Even if it were just slightly harder, it would be helpful. It has been slow moving after 1500 ranks!
Thanks,
GENT

I can't make any promises, but I'll look and see if there's anything I can do about that. Though, let's be honest you're probably the only one in that boat! :)

I'm not past 1500, but I've noticed learning slowing as well.

Huh, I don't know how I'd feel about that. I've got some instruments that I'm pretty attached to already, including a pair of bones that are bonded from back when instrument bonding was possible. But they're all of only middling quality. I'd hate to have to choose between sentimental value and masterful craftsmanship.
Maybe instrument crafting can include refurbishing?

Things from the lists I'd like to see in game, in order of most to least wanted:
viola
horn -- more options of actual animal horn (and horn recorders), and some metal types please
warhorn -- in regular shops, not just festival (doesn't have to have the special functioning)
gemshorn -- in regular shops, not just festival
harpsichord (for homes?)
Things NOT from the lists I'd like to see in game (I know you said to stick to the lists -- I couldn't help it):
cello -- for homes maybe; as Kasto noted, one exists on Ratha
guqin
wooden pipes/pan pipes -- I think pan pipes have existed before
bone whistle/bone flute -- I only see one from a very old festival
bullroarer
lur (long wooden trumpet, would not mind if it were just called a wooden trumpet)
I've also always wanted instruments that were more fantastical in nature -- perhaps something utilizing magic. I once envisioned an Elothean instrument that was made from globes that produced color in addition to sound when played properly. I'd love for instruments like this to fill out the harder end of the range.
I will email all this to you as well Evike.

I'm sure, but since I wasn't at the meeting, dot play a hard, and have no idea what you guys were talking about, a question softens the interrupt.
I would like a harmonica in DR, but it's not period correct, wasn't invented till the 1800s

Do earth time periods have to play a role in DR's setting? I feel like we can accept harmonica's along side the fireballs and elves.
>>Really phone? Don't play a bard. Not that I'm against dotting hards I guess.
I don't always dotting, but when I do I like dotting hards.

<<I was going through my inbox and I realized that no one sent me suggestions for new types of instruments they'd like to see!
I don't know instruments so well, so I'm unsure how helpful I can be.
I always enjoyed the non-standard folky instruments, such as the jug and stamping stick in P5. They felt more colloquial and less imposing. As such I love the harmonica idea (can't believe we don't have one in fact). I'd even go for a pot to bang or a washboard (also please to be making them weather resistant!).
On a personal note if you could make a stump fiddle, I think I'd make a shrine. http://www.stumpffiddle.net/ It's something my grandfather used to play, the silly pole that he was.

I think I'll suggest the bone whistle over in the carving thread.
I do not usually buy festival instruments because they're so ... decorated. I'd like to see more instruments which are realistically styled. No musician in their right mind would pay good money for a violin which has inlays on the body, for instance.
And while we're talking about instruments, is there a chance we could have one the worked as a focus for those ritual spells instead of having to look like a mage?

Bandurria or Laud

Although the bandoura is similar. Laud is not.
Mandore looks good too.

And the citole is more interesting because of how it looks:

I know I would love to see different qualities of instruments out there. It is only recently we were able to get higher quality instruments. while I have WAY too many instruments already, I would definitely buy some more that are better than "good" quality. Harder to play as well for those Bards who are out-ranking their instruments.
I have a Lyra Viol, and have never seen another one (I may be wrong as I haven't really searched) and would love to own a Cello. Home instruments would be fun too, something big enough that it could be a furniture item?
Also adding Cambrinth to instruments, I have a Violin with this already but would love to see more of that.

Re: Funny story... on 08/15/2013 02:40 PM CDT
Wow lots of things.
Going to try to touch on a few of them.
We can have things like harmonicas even if they aren't technically period correct. Why? This is Dragonrealms, we are a fantasy game. We don't live hard and fast by the medieval or renaissance times at all. Now, we may not actually call it a harmonica, and give it a DR-esque name.
Instrument decoration -- I've owned and played a violin with a beautifully inlaid body. I believe this is rather a matter of personal preference rather than playability, but I can either try to make more instruments with plain looks or there is always the option of alteration to reduce it. I'd hate to think people aren't using an instrument type just because of the way it looks in the examine when that's something you never see unless you actively look at it or show it to people. I know in my time as a player I bought many a dress with a terrible-to-me examine and just never showed it to anyone, but felt the tap was just fine!
The quality of the instrument is something I can look at as well when making new ones. There's a lot of limitations on what I'm able to do and change with the existing instrument system though, guys. It's definitely a thing. I've been looking at home instruments as well, but here's the thing -- if I make a home instrument I'm pretty sure I can't make it a functional container (ie. you cannot put stuff on or under it, etc) it can either be a functional instrument or a regular home type container. I sort of have the feeling that most people would rather not give up their space in a home for an instrument they may use only occasionally.
Almost forgot this one -- as far as adding instruments to ritual focii capability, its the same type of deal as with the home instruments. You can either play it or have it be a ritual focus. We're limited in what kind of things we can shove on an item. But I'm more than happy to check and see if we can make some non-functional instrument focii if you guys would like.
All in all, this is only ultimately a fluff project where I'd just like to get more types of instruments out there for people who'd like something different.

>>I have a Lyra Viol, and have never seen another one (I may be wrong as I haven't really searched)
Just FYI, there was one for sale at the Hollow Eve fest, in the "various types of Elves" tent.
>>Also adding Cambrinth to instruments,
This has always been neat and I'm not against it. I just have been kinda sad to find it no longer very useful, now that enchantes aren't playable with instruments. Because they're so delicate, I don't usually want to be whipping out an instrument whenever I'm casting something.
>>I can either try to make more instruments with plain looks
Lots of plain options in regular stores would be nice. Mainly though I'd love some guidance on what types of wood, etc., are actually generally used for the different instruments, and what they look/sound like. Usually I have to look this up. In short: would love instruments to look realistic.
>>The quality of the instrument is something I can look at
Would love this. Was really hoping for the high quality instrument merchant to show up at Guildfest again -- last time there was both limited sale of high quality instruments, and an alterer who would increase the quality of an instrument. I'd love to see both again.
>>if I make a home instrument I'm pretty sure I can't make it a functional container
This would be okay with me. Then again, I'd probably MOST prefer that the cello be carryable (if huge and heavy), with perhaps a stand of some sort to display it in the home. The harpsichord should be home-only.
>>But I'm more than happy to check and see if we can make some non-functional instrument focii if you guys would like.
Personally not an interest of mine.
Oh -- and don't know if this would be easy. But there used to be some great cases with verby open/closes. I'd love to see those again, especially with some cambrinth in them.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this point. I played mine for several years without any depreciation of tone. It may, of course depend on the extent of inlaying. All in all, this is a fantasy world and any type of real world limitations don't have to exist here.
>Lots of plain options in regular stores would be nice. Mainly though I'd love some guidance on what types of wood, etc., are actually generally used for the different instruments, and what they look/sound like. Usually I have to look this up. In short: would love instruments to look realistic.
This is something I can look in to adding more of. But, like I said above, we don't have to (and probably don't want to) limit ourselves too much to actual real world restrictions and limitations as far as instruments go.
Decoration itself I think is more of a personal preference in game, anyway. If people want a super fancy violin I'm not opposed to it being absolutely similar sound-wise to a plain one. Getting too much realism in the game can make it an annoying pain, and it's something I'd much rather not do. I'd much prefer you guys enjoy playing your instruments and enjoy the instruments you have rather than limiting you what can sometimes be a tool to make your character unique.

The following two cases also have the special verbs:
a large case of deep ebon suede
a large case covered in an exquisite needlework tapestry
They are from the Hollow Eve tent Dark Symphony. Which I guess is pretty good access to nice cases after all! I think I must have been lamenting before that they were not available in the cambrinth and thigh-worn versions. Some more styles might be nice too.
