Hey gang. After 2 years not playing I decided to dabble a bit to see what's new. So, what's new? I haven't played since before 3.0 and I'm not really sure what to make of some things. Main questions I have are:
What does Bardic Lore do? How does one train it? Do we still need/benefit from instruments?
What spells teach things well? Do any spells that were enchantes have different functions now? Which ones are A+ must use material? What is the point of WORD and ECHO? They both seem kind of...well, idk why I'd choose to buff what those two buff.
Do we have any new abilities? Scream concussion and defiance are still around, as is piercing whistle, we get anything else?
What else has changed? Anything you can think of is appreciated, I feel like I'll have fun relearning thing to a point before frustration at sucking will chase me off so I want to try to minimize that.
Thanks,

>>So, what's new?
A lot. Elanthipedia has a fair bit of it documented, but even more is changing right now in Test with the roll out of 3.1 soon.
>>What does Bardic Lore do?
The intention is that it powers non-magical Bard abilities. It it is, bluntly, underdeveloped right now as 3.0 and 3.1 have taken the majority of the dev bandwidth and I've been waiting to see where that all settles out to properly redo Bard abilities.
>>How does one train it?
Screams, Practices, Evokes (Which replaced Perceive History) mostly. I'll let others give you more training tips.
>>Do we still need/benefit from instruments?
They are no longer tied to your magic. Performance, as a skill, is required for Bards and is also not quite where we'd like it right now.
>>What spells teach things well?
That's going to depend on your skill levels and it's the exp model is being redone for 3.1 (Due to some major problems with the 3.0 model). Again - I'll leave that mostly to other players to answer.
>>Do any spells that were enchantes have different functions now?
Many of them.
>>Which ones are A+ must use material?
You could try ABAN - it's sickeningly overpowered in 3.0 (By far the largest offender of any guild), but it's going to be getting a fairly sold nerf batting in 3.1.
>>What is the point of WORD and ECHO? They both seem kind of...well, idk why I'd choose to buff what those two buff.
You can only have one of the four rituals up at a time so it depends on how you play which one you'd want.
ECHO is suite of magic focused abilities for general use. WORD is more focused on interacting with mojo abilities (like screams), though is likely a little underwhelming right now since the bardic abilities are in rough shape.
>>Do we have any new abilities?
In the sense of bardic abilities? Not really - but there's a lot more you can do with magic than you could before. That whole "More than one spell at a time thing" is kinda crazy :)
>>Sirens Call seems to be gone from the list on Elanthipedia.
It's one of a small handful that hasn't been converted to the new magic system yet. It's not gone forever.
>>Also, could someone tell me what Tactics does?
Tactics is a lore based combat skill that mostly focuses on non damaging moves (Circle, bob, weave and that sort of thing).

Thanks Raesh! I need to refresh my memory on what ritual spells are I think. Which also makes me wonder a few more things. Can you have a ritual spell going at the same time as a cyclic, and meanwhile casting non cyclic spells? And of our spells, which ones now have a lingering effect (as in, can bards buff up now?) I definitely have to do a lot of experimenting, but probably not gonna get to it until I remind myself what all my items do so I don't accidentally silence a room like I did last night and piss people off. If I'm gonna piss people off, I'd prefer it be intentional, deadly, and behind an impermeable wall of bard buffs!
Thanks again,

>>I need to refresh my memory on what ritual spells are I think.
Ritual spells are new with 3.0. They take immense amounts of mana offset by the use of a foci and have extra long durations.
>>Can you have a ritual spell going at the same time as a cyclic, and meanwhile casting non cyclic spells?
There is no limit to how many ritual spells you can have at a time (There just aren't a lot of them). It's a specific interaction between the four Bard ones that limit you to using one at a time for both balance and lore reasons.
>>And of our spells, which ones now have a lingering effect (as in, can bards buff up now?)
A lot of them are standard buff spells now. Elanthipedia should have a full list. Somewhere around half the Bard spells are cyclics.

Re: Fill me in on 02/06/2014 09:39 AM CST
what's new stuff is, like they said, on Elanthipedia. A must-have resource.
Bardic lore is still waiting for love.
Right now basically it just qualifies you for titles, but its not "required" until its fleshed out.
I usually train it by whistles and practicing before a session <as for levels, my bard is almost 95th circle>
I haven't found any evokes, but I usually don't have a problem training it.
right now practicing music only helps you practice music better.
Spells: I use BOS or Pyre <in a non-justice area> for TM, DEMA for Debilitation and Augmentation training in combat, EYE for utility and GJ for warding - usually put those on during practice sessions - although I practice alone <people take issue if you cast GJ around them>, and whatever scroll spells I happen upon for sorcery <bards can circle on it, but its still far behind my other magic>. You can get one feat free, there's a trainer of other magical feats that wanders around in riverhaven, one <in prime in crossing that hangs out in the Aes Academy, and one I believe on ratha. Those you pay for with spell slots. Our magic is pretty much like other mages now in that we can pick and choose our spells, <see elanthepedia>
Throw voice is still the same, we haven't learned all of them yet <although both Bards and Thieves were supposed to get all of them in 3.0.>
plus theres a whole lot of stuff to do with crafting :-)
Word and Echo I haven't used.
Tactics I have no problem training, although Brawling is my Dwarf's secondary weapon, so I train both at the same time. I throw in Damaging ones for brawling and non-damaging ones for tactics.
<<If I can't cast thunderclap, you can't summon the dark lord of the abyss to devour the flesh of the innocent>>

You might want to pop into Test and play with things there. Nobody to piss off, and you'll be able to experiment with the new versions of things.
> What does Bardic Lore do?
Pretty much nothing, yet.
> How does one train it?
Practice breathing/stretching, whistle piercing and evokes.
> Do we still need/benefit from instruments?
We need them to train Performing, which doesn't do anything yet but is a circle requirement.
> What spells teach things well?
Right now, cyclics teach way too well. Until 3.1 drops, GJ is the last word in Warding training, for example.
> Do any spells that were enchantes have different functions now?
Not much is radically different. Harmony is defensive only, Drums is boxes/agility only, Lilt lost the FA buff. Resonance improves the damage stats of a target weapon, rather than being a skill buff. 3.1 Dema is very different.
> Which ones are A+ must use material?
When I'm in combat, I keep the following going: Abandoned Heart, Drums, Harmony, Name, Rage, Resonance, MAF, Misd, MPP, Echo. There are only 2 limitations: you can only have 1 bardic ritual up at a time, and you can only have 1 cyclic up at a time.
If you find yourself with mana trouble, consider grabbing the Deep Attunement and Efficient Channelling feats. I cast all my normal spells from cambrinth, which helps significantly with mana use, and I find the Dedicated Cambrinth feat very useful for that.
> What is the point of WORD and ECHO? They both seem kind of...well, idk why I'd choose to buff what those two buff.
Echo is my ritual of choice. It's probably the only one I'll grab when the preview ends (of course, it's also the only one with a prereq I wasn't already going to take, so maybe not). Who can say no to more Attunement, and thus more mana?
Int and Wis both contribute to TM damage and contested spells. Int also aids Perception checks, and surely Wis does something else of use? I don't get much out of the Sorcery buff, but there's at least one effect in each of the rituals that's wasted on me, so Echo still comes out the winner. Word is very underwhelming because the Bardic Lore support is pretty much nil, so I don't blame you for not wanting it now; we'll have to reevaluate when more mojo stuff comes out.

More questions!
Are Strength and Stamina still not really worth raising past 50ish?
I did practice breathing and it got me to 17/34 but then it all drained before I could breathe again. Evoking at the landfall dock did absolutely nothing for me, are there different difficulties?
How do we change the default amount we cast spells with? I'm used to mana song, that's apparently not it anymore.
Does Joy teach Warding out of combat? I've been blasting it with around 70 held mana and it's not teaching me Warding, Elemental Magic, or Attunement.
I still have to get feats, looks like I have 75 spell slots to spend so that shouldn't be an issue.
I just realized that Chorus of Madmen has also gone MIA. Will that be returning? With dragon death put back into it?! :D

> Are Strength and Stamina still not really worth raising past 50ish?
Fatigue plays more of a role in combat these days, but if you're not having fatigue issues, there's no point getting more stamina. Strength plays more of a role in damage, so it's worth raising.
> I did practice breathing and it got me to 17/34 but then it all drained before I could breathe again.
I believe stretching is on a separate timer? I would imagine the two would be enough to keep you going. I mostly used piercing whistle, though.
> Evoking at the landfall dock did absolutely nothing for me, are there different difficulties?
Yes, although no one's really mapped the difficulties, and I doubt there's a good spread yet. You might want to try the others and see how they work for you. Keep in mind that there's a 1 hour timer on learning from any evoke; I'm not sure if an evoke that teaches nothing still starts the timer.
> How do we change the default amount we cast spells with? I'm used to mana song, that's apparently not it anymore.
You can't; default is always min. If you want to cast higher, you'll need to prep at a higher amount.
> Does Joy teach Warding out of combat? I've been blasting it with around 70 held mana and it's not teaching me Warding, Elemental Magic, or Attunement.
Held mana doesn't work that way anymore. GJ will draw its power from your held mana, but you're still casting it at min unless you specified otherwise. It does teach out of combat, but don't expect to get much Attunement from it. You'll need to powerwalk for that.
GJ also won't teach very well if you're in Test.
> I still have to get feats, looks like I have 75 spell slots to spend so that shouldn't be an issue.
Keep in mind that most spells cost more than 1 slot now.
> I just realized that Chorus of Madmen has also gone MIA. Will that be returning?
Last we heard, yes. And it will be able to kill.

>>How does one train it?
Personally I do a PRACTICE STRETCH before training Performance (this has the added bonus of boosting Performance so training it goes faster), then I intersperse WHISTLE PIERCING in my climbing and combat routines.
>>What spells teach things well?
At the moment, cyclics. I use GJ for Warding, CARE or SANC for Utility, FAE or HODI for Augmentation, and AEWO for Debilitation. Note that PYRE and ABAN are cyclic TM spells, but these don't teach as well, mainly because they destroy everything in the room pretty quickly.
>>Scream concussion and defiance are still around,
Note that scream concussion doesn't seem to do anything any more. It's still around but only ever lands glancing hits. The plan is to eventually turn it into a spell akin to Dragon's Breath (cast spell, later release scream, based on TM). According to Raesh it'll be called Thunderous Voice or Voice of Thunder.
Scream havoc is slightly more useful in 3.0, if you want to get an opponent away from you without taking the retreat penalty (retreating penalizes your offense for a short time).
Let's see, what else is new and cool? Well, like Raesh said, ABAN is pretty sick. I'm personally a big fan of AEWO -- it lets you slow down combat for tough situations. Also try putting up WILL and then casting BOS or PYRE. ;)

It's the same timer. 17/34 every so often isn't a bad way to train BL, but I (and most, I think) find piercing whistle the most efficient especially since it can easily be done in combat.
> How do we change the default amount we cast spells with? I'm used to mana song, that's apparently not it anymore.
Specifically, with cyclic spells you prep spell #, and each pulse # mana is pulled from your attunement to power the spell (since Bards get the raw channeling feat for free).

> Does Joy teach Warding out of combat? I've been blasting it with around 70 held mana and it's not teaching me Warding, Elemental Magic, or Attunement.
Cyclics don't quite work that way.
You PREP GJ XX, and then CAST. Every pulse, it will require a certain amount of mana. You can power it with held mana, cambrinth, or straight from your attunement if you have the feat for it (which Bards get for free). If you don't have enough mana from any those sources, it fails. These sources don't add to the power of the spell, they merely power the spell (which is unlike 2.0). So you'll want to prep the cyclic as high as possible initially to make it more difficult and thus teach better.
Personally, I prefer to use a combo of regular spells and one cyclic to train magic skills, rather than just using cyclics. NAME teaches Warding very well, which it what I've been using. Note that in 3.1 (Test instance) you'll not be learning as insanely well from cyclics as you do in Prime, so I'd probably just start off the bat with mixing cast-spells and cyclics to train all your magic skills.

Re: Fill me in on 02/07/2014 01:00 PM CST
Thanks for all the input guys! Anyone know what the actual timer is for practicing? Part of the issues I was seeing was probably because I didn't realize I had my bonus xp turned on which I assume was making me drain ranks quicker than normal so I'll have to try again without that and with piercing whistle added in to keep it going. Piercing whistle drains mojo though, correct? Since enchantes don't use instruments now...well, I guess what I'm asking is, how do you refill mojo in combat now without music?
So far I've been doing ok with Warding, Utility, and Augmentation (though I guess I shouldn't get used to learning them well, seems my timing sucks), but Debilitation is rough so far. Is Debilitation learning based on just performing a debilitation spell, or does it have to be within rank range of your debilitation skill? That is, if I have 600 debilitation but I only have combats in the 300s, am I just screwed until the combats catch up? It's hard for me to say right now because the closes thing to me that I have to try things out on is undead which apparently trumps all of our debilitation effects.
I'm gonna see how I do with just a constant buff loop and then cranking out debilitation cyclics and TM spells, hopefully I don't get myself annihilated!
Thanks again for all the help, and for the welcome backs!

>>Illiena: Fatigue plays more of a role in combat these days, but if you're not having fatigue issues, there's no point getting more stamina.
I'm not sure if I'd go that far. Stamina raises vitality, which now increases the damage that each body part can take. (In 2.0, body part "HP" was static and never increased regardless of stats or skills.)
Stamina also helps you defend against vs. fortitude spells.

I'm not sure if I'd go that far. Stamina raises vitality, which now increases the damage that each body part can take. (In 2.0, body part "HP" was static and never increased regardless of stats or skills.)
Stamina also helps you defend against vs. fortitude spells.

Bonus pools don't work that way. Your ranks will go up twice as fast with every pulse, but your mindstate will go down at the normal rate.
> Piercing whistle drains mojo though, correct?
Nope. It's on a 2 minute timer, but that's the only limitation.
> how do you refill mojo in combat now without music?
Mojo regenerates slowly on its own. Faster if you have WORD up. And I don't think instrument enchantes ever refilled mojo.
> That is, if I have 600 debilitation but I only have combats in the 300s, am I just screwed until the combats catch up?
Pretty much. Debilitation learning is your skill vs the critter's skill, same as TM.

>>Driscolls: Is Debilitation learning based on just performing a debilitation spell, or does it have to be within rank range of your debilitation skill?
Debilitation (like targeted magic) is a combat skill, so you need to be casting on creatures that pose a sufficient challenge.

I don't know how long you've been back Issus but there's a small window of time where you can swap Debilitation, Augmentation and Warding ranks around. If your augmentation or warding skills are closer to your combats than debilitation it might help to swap one of them with debilitation to shorten the amount of time it takes to close the gap between combat and debilitation. (unless this is no longer a 'thing'; the swapping that is) If they're all about the same it won't help obviously.

Body parts still have static hit points, but vitality reduces incoming part damage like an ablative barrier. The higher your remaining vitality, the less wound damage; the lower your vitality the higher the damage to any of your body parts.
At low vitality a huge hit is going to do massive damage to an untouched limb, and at full vitality you take no wounds at all.

You don't. My routine (before capping BL) was to use PRACTICE and put up WORD before going into combat. (WORD helps your passive mojo recovery quite a bit). Once in combat I was able to use Defiance and Whistle to keep BL moving. You can also use Defiance and Whistle outside of combat.
>am I just screwed until the combats catch up?
Yes. I've spent the entire last year catching up my combats to my Debil. Still haven't earned a single rank since 3.0. You should be able to close the gap much faster though, as my ranks are nearly twice yours. Bonus pools are super helpful!

I believe the syntax for this is EXP SWITCH.
I'm not sure, but I think you have 24 in-game hours to do this. I know because I logged in an alt a little bit ago and, despite having already switched her ages ago to where I wanted her, she still had the option to switch.
Anyway, I'd try it right away. See if you can switch Debil into your combat range.

Welcome home, Issus! I wandered back just before 3.0 fell last year, and it was a brutal shock.
In addition to switching your magic around (by the time I realized I'd been short-changed on that, 2 months had gone by. So much for 24 hours...) you have a month, I think, to redo your stats if you need to. The command is RESPEC
You can convert your Mech into one of the crafts, but talk to someone first. Most are not finished, one is not available at all. Only forging is complete. I know people who converted their mech thinking the rest of things would be done quickly and are still waiting to be useful.
All magic is now cast like mages. There is no more MANA SONG, no held mana for anything. On the up side, your cycling songs do not ever go off anymore. But you only get to cast them at the mana you want, there is no more adjusting. you'll have to stop them and start all over.
I still have trouble with the magic, after being a bard all those years. And almost all the abbreviations changed, but may not be correct on Elanthipedia. SPELLS will give you the correct abbreviations. All spells in prime are still in open testing. In Test, you'll have to choose them.
DISCERN is a new command that is supposedly useful about specific magic spells that you know. I only have the word of mages for this, it tells me little of nothing. I go back to Silvy and ask if I have a question.
Since they made us mages, all those mage skills are now critical, like magical devices (renamed to Arcana) and targetting. Neither were grandfathered in for bards, even though we could not learn either naturally.
Shields have become the primary defense, a good one is not just nice, it's pretty much required. AND you can wear new small ones on your arm and have them useful WITH your left hand free.
If you use ranged, check with another ranged user for those new adaptations you will need to know.
I've spent the past year backtraining things which I never needed in all the years before: shields, cambrinth, skinning, targetted, and a few other things I've forgotten. Some of these, like targetting and arcana, started from scratch. Others, like shield and skinning, had less than 70.
I hope you find yourself in better place than I did. It was a really painful year, and some things are still not where they should be according to the new setup.
You'll find even your treasured weapons not as good as plain steel forged ones, so find a good weaponsmith and get them to explain it all. Ditto on armor.
... and inflation hit, it was, by far, the largest shock. I am halfway over that.
Holler if there is ANYTHING you need. I am usually in the Crossing, but just now, in Muspar'i.
~D
P.S. And many pre-3.0 bards' area songs only work for their group. These bards were considered broken in 3.0. But you lose area songs in 3.1 anyway, without spending precious spell slots for "feats". (which needs explaining, too. There was a WHOLE new lingo I walked into. Every once in a while, I stop a friend and ask them to translate for me, still.)

Its all in how you train, and how you look at it.
My prime bard never trained beyond 30th. I looked on the 3.0 changes as a chance to try something new.
My <plat> bard was 15th circle in 11/19/10. I hit 30th 1/30 2012, so I wasn't exactly circling fast, when 3.0 hit plat. I hit 40th 12/29/12, 50th 2/22/13, 60th 4/4/13, 70th 5/25/13, 80th on 10/22/13, 90th on 1/3/14, and 95th <where I'm at currently> on 2/8/14. 3.0 for me encouraged the playability of the guild. And I've had fun playing him along the way, which is a good thing as well. :-)
Although I'm still learning more "bardy" things along the way, I think that the bard guild as a whole has benefitted from 3.0 for the most part.
