I'm not sure what you have available as a new bard, but with a smallish amount of skill you can start to RECALL HISTORY and RECALL AREA at and near certain spots around Crossing respectively (all of elanthia actually, but there's more than enough in Crossing itself to do you for a while.) EVOKE HISTORY (I think that's the right syntax...) at other less common spots around the game will also teach it as well, but I think that ability happens much later.

I think that using certain other Bard abilities will teach it as well, like PRACTICE and maybe RECALL. I'm not sure on these ones, however.

Last time I played a bard (after 3.0, before 3.1) I just locked it by doing scream havoc/concussive in combat?

Thanks, sprinkling in some whistle piercing with my hunting routine works well for training.
