I have a character who 'found' some bones so I went to get a cloth and decided to check it out. Having absolutely no skill in any instrument, I tried cleaning it. It's obvious that I don't have the skill for it because I get a message that looks like this:

>You hold your cloth in one hand and scrub harshly at your ivory-handled bones, but only manage to remove a small amount of the grime from it. The instrument's sheer complexity requires you to work slower than you might normally.
>[Roundtime: 17 seconds.]

And I find I am learning the instrument, just slowly.

Should I wait until I can clean it successfully before I attempt to play it?

The first ranks of instruments can still be kind of tough. You can keep trying to clean it, which may take a little while, or ask someone else if they can clean them for you. You can try to play them while dirty but depending on how dirty they are it could make it pretty difficult. Try playing off-key ruffs on them partially cleaned and see how you do.
