I don't know for sure, but the statement on elanthipedia right before the one about being able to wear oval at the largest is this:
<<It automatically will shape to the smaller size to be worn.
Based on what I can decipher from that grammar, I'm guessing that if you attempt to wear it then it will automatically resize itself to the largest possible worn size without any need to do anything else on your part.
That said, the page hasn't had any substantive edits for around 2 years, so it is entirely possible the info there is out of date and doesn't reflect 3.1 spell mechanics.

Lot of options for that, like Luiri said, just wear it, and you'll wear it as a medium (oval) shield...
