I'm trying to figure out the best ways of training empathy through non-healing means.
Not for any IC reason, I just tend to play on the off hours a lot when there's only 100something people in the realms, makes learning empathy a pain.
First are a couple Qs about perceiving health:
1. Do we get more experience for more people we perceive, or is it flat so long as we sense something?
2. Does perceiving NPCs and critters teach the same as actual players?
3. What kind of timer is on it for learning?
Any tips or suggestions for off-hours empathy learning, lemme know! Thanks!

While I don't have solid answers to your questions, let me try and offer some advice:
>>1. Do we get more experience for more people we perceive, or is it flat so long as we sense something?
If you do, it isn't too noticeable at the higher end. I wouldn't focus on trying to get the most number of things perceived at once.
>>2. Does perceiving NPCs and critters teach the same as actual players?
I've never noticed a dramatic difference. I have trained a number of Empath characters using just GS/NPCs. Again, I wouldn't focus on trying to maximize experience this way.
>>3. What kind of timer is on it for learning?
The room timer is actually pretty short. After running a quick test, I was surprised to see it was only about 140-160 seconds long.
However, that timer is only for the room. If you change rooms and perceive the same object (i.e. a Guardian Spirit) you don't run into the learning timer.
My advice:
Get GS if you don't have it already. It makes things easier and more flexible. Get up and go on a health walk. I usually incorporate a stealing run and hit up all the shops in the Crossing. You can juggle, fold origami, perceive health, cast spells, steal items, forage, etc. You can vary the length of the run, or just walk around in circles perceiving your GS if you like. It's not terribly difficult to lock Empathy in this manner.
Have fun,

Yeah, I was gonna work towards GS for that reason.
But if the timer works by room, and not by me perceiving, then I should be able to walk around hunting grounds and work it well so long as there's critters, so that's comforting.
thanks!

1)It's like HUNT, you learn based on the hardest thing you found rather than how much stuff you found.
2)yes, sort of. I'm starting to wonder if there's any real distinction between PC and NPC, but there are distinctions between them (ie, empath/non-empath) that aren't necessarily matching up with what a player can find at a given level. I don't recall being able to sense empath GLs and autopaths at the same levels I was first able to sense PC empaths, as an example.
3)there are two timers, though one is less a timer and more a passive RT that prevents you from perceiving health but doesn't interfere with anything else. This one's around 10-30 seconds and gives you an obvious message.

Exactly 20 seconds from when you last used perceive health. (When you issued the command, not when the RT is up from perceive health)
