>The funny part about winter in New England is there are as many car crashes durring a noreaster as there are durring a light flurry. It's as though as soon as people see white stuff falling from the sky they must drive into a pole, or into another car.
Heh, sounds like when it rains in Southern California. Wet stuff falling from the sky here makes people have some sort of temporary loss of sanity when they're behind the wheel of a moving vehicle. Sometimes I think it's because when it rains too many people are trying to figure out how to put the top up on their car while going 110 mph on the freeway...

I always laughed when it rained in San Diego because my favorite local news station would send correspondents all over the county for "Storm Watch". It was ALWAYS Storm Watch, even when it drizzled (which, in CA, is a torrential downpour). And they'd have live team coverage and go between all the different people and ask them if it was raining in that part of the county.
I tell people in Kansas about that and they either don't believe me or think I'm crazy.

I spent two weeks in San Diego once while waiting to get out of the Navy, I have this to say:
Californian's are the whiniest about rain, the absolute worst drivers (except for Florida) and have more wrecks on a sunday morning than Wichita Kansas does in a week.
That being said... It's not the rain you need to worry about, it's when the rain stops and the sky feels deathly calm and gives you shivers even if it's warm that you need to look out for tornados in Kansas.
As far as Florida is concerned... I don't ever want to hear anyone say anything about Kansas being flat... because I heard a native Floridian point out that Kansas was "way too hilly" If you want my opinion, Florida is much more horizontal than Kansas will ever be

While I don't think earthquakes are really that bad, I do almost prefer tornadoes or hurricanes or whatnot because at least you have some warning that they are coming and may occur. With an earthquake, there's no notice at all.
Not to say that I like tornadoes, but they do give me a chance to make friends with my downstairs neighbors. I usually knock on their door and go "Hi, I'm from California and don't like tornadoes, can I hang out with you until it goes away?" and they invite me in. :)

Hehe. I guess having lived through a number of SF earthquakes, and a Southern Cal one when I was at college in SDSU, I've become a bit desensitized...not that afraid of them.
Meanwhile, my sister-in-law and niece in Kansas have lost a lot of property due to those dumb tornadoes. I don't understand how they can stand it...and every year, without fail, there's another one coming along. How do they find peace of mind?
California people need to come back to CA!
Another question...has anyone been to FunWorld USA in Kansas City? Thinking of taking my son there as part of our theme park tour this summer : )

Heh, I had forgoten that NH(my tiny slice of NE) is on/near a fault line til I started reading all these earthquake posts. We get "quake" once every 10 or so years. Nothing like what you get out in CA, but we'll wake up in the night and everything will be vibrating just a little bit.
I think the last one was about 5 or so years ago and was in fact in upstate NY, and we felt little rumbles for a moment or two here in southern NH.
~Nexty, loves NH maple syrup(better then that VT syrup!!!), flannel shirts, pick your own apple season at the farm stands, pumpkin carving, pumpkin fest!, and climbing to the top of MT. Monadnock and looking out over the hundreds of tree's at the peak color change.

I'm a life-long New Yorker (the city, that is) and within the last 25 years we've had two earthquakes that you could feel in the city itself. Tiny, baby earthquakes, true, but earthquakes nonetheless. But that isn't counting the subway rumbling under your building every ten minutes, or Donald Trump walking his giant ego down Fifth Avenue ;)
Re: Bay Area Gathering? on 05/11/2005 08:10 AM CDT
>>No earthquakes, period, for the Midwest. If we start shaking like California, Simu's liable to come crashing down.
Obviously no one's heard of the giant volcanic caldera under yellowstone. The 21st most dangerous volcano in the world and one of the world's most active geological spots.
So there certainly are, and will be again earthquakes in the midwest

Having gone through Loma Prieta in '89, and seen what similar earthquakes have done to other parts of the world, I'd rather be here than just about anywhere when an earthquake hits.
I must say that the Universal Studios "earthquake" which mirrors the Embarcadero BART station is a bit disconcerting though...especially when you've used the Embarcadero station for years.

Um, I started with the Pasadena quake in '70 and lived with 'em all my life. Don't notice 'em gone now either, since there's no real difference between the train or bus outside shaking the building and an earthquake. Same with sonic booms. Eh. No biggie, really.
What I'm glad to be clear of are the firestorms and flooding. Yeah, we can have fires here and in rowhouses/apartments they're not fun, but they don't hit 50 mph and raze everything in their path. Same with floods, yeah, lots of folks get soggy basements and the soil, when soaked, just doesn't pick up anymore, especially in the massive rainstorms, but even Isabel just flooded the harbor and island areas. Well, duh. This isn't to mention the landslides when you get flood conditions after the firestorms in Cali.
Dio's player, not entirely looking forward to going back to Cali today.

Yes, that is really freaky!! When I first moved out to So Cal, I went there and decided if THAT was going to be what I had to expect, I was going straight back to the other coast. I was terrified for months. Still, even with all it's faults (heh, pun intended), I love California. Well, except for psycho crazy people shooting folks on the freeway RIGHT where I was just driving yesterday. That isn't so hot.

How can you say TN has winters? After living most my life in upstate NY and living in nashville last year, I can hardly call that a winter. It was so depressing that I had to move back to NY. Well, that and grad school. There nothing quite like the Finger lake region. 4 seasons, crisp air and the smell of farms....
