>>Can anyone guess what happens?

If I remember, the can implodes, right? The sudden temperature change drops the air pressure inside the can and--CRACKLE!--it instantly crushes itself.

LOL...now, did you actually see that episode of Bill Nye where he does that with a 55 gal. barrel? Or were you just plugging his name for the sake of it...hehehe

I used to watch Bill Nye and Beakman's World all the time when I was a kid...even got a chance to meet Beakman at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Tampa...that was really cool. He put a rose in liquid nitrogen(I think, might have been another gas) and then crumbled it into a thousand pieces with a gentle grip.

I'm a total science geek. Must be why I'm doing pre-pharmacy classes now after finishing a B.S. in Management Information Systems...lol

Dunno, I might've seen it but I don't remember. I just remember watching someone (someone from the St. Louis Science Center, I think) dunk a hot empty soda can into a bowl of ice water or perhaps even something colder like liquid nitrogen/carbon dioxide and having the can crush itself. We got a nice little explanation for that and other cool sciency stuff.

Yep, is exactly what happens, although to be a bit more accurate, and we were required to be, when you heat the can, it fills with water vapor, and the air is pushed out, when you then cool the can, the vapor turns back to liquid, and so yeah, the air pressure drops inside the can, while outside it remains constant.

Further fun, in the same vein as atmospheric pressure. This one scared me though.

And why we worry so much about the oxygen in our bloodstream and the nitrogen in our tissues, too.

Don't want our insides going pop.

I also seem to remember seeing this on Mr. Wizard when I was younger. I would get up early just to watch it before school. He used a gas can though and said that he was going to call "a giant" to come crush it. Now that show was fun to watch! Science geeks unite!

The coolest demonstration/experiment I've done has had to of been the thermite reaction. Nothing tops that for pure pyrote pyrotechnic fun! If you haven't seen it before, check out http://www.ilpi.com/genchem/demo/thermite/ for a description and demo.

I dont recall the compound since it was like 16 years ago but we made a contact explosive with iodine that was a purple powder in my highschool chem class, the compound starts out as a liquid but has to dry... anyway.. our brilliant Chemistry teacher left about.. oh 3 tablespoons (wet liquid) of the explosive sitting on his desk over a weekend to let it dry out, come the next monday he was at his desk moving things around and abscentmindedly set a stack of books and papers on the now dry explosive.. boom.. lots of purple smoke, a small desk fire, and an evacuation of the school. oh and we didnt have to re-do the homework he blew up and all of us got an A on that paper.

Nitrogen tri-iodide. Great stuff. Not very strong, but very, very sensitive. I believe it's what's used in airbags, the decomposition of it produces a large quantity of N2 gas that expands the airbag. That's fun by the way. I miss that car.

Anyways, our Chem Club was making it in the stockroom for a magic show, and somehow it got spilled (at least a liter.) We tried cleaning it up, but for several weeks when you walked around the stockroom you'd make little snapping noises every time you took a step.

I'd tell you my disgustingly cool story, but I'm not sure you all want to hear it...it has to do with stupid doctors wielding scalpels and the removal of major organs that had no place being outside of my body.

So I'll tell you about my own personal Bill Nye. We had a very crazy teacher my last year of high school. On our first day of class, he set himself on fire to shock us into listening to the safety rules. While he was going up in flames, he calmly but quickly explained all the rules and then dove under the fire blanket and yelled for someone to put him out. We managed to do so, but his flaming body melted a hole into the fire blanket. It was at that moment I knew the semester would not be boring.

I took chemistry in summer school with three of my friends, and we had the disturbing habit of "experimenting" with mixing chemicals and the bunsen burner once we were done with whatever the day's assignement was. Our chemistry teacher always kept a watchful eye on us, issuing an "Uh UHHHHH" when we reached for certain combinations. Though he never fully stopped our exploring, we did notice that when the fall semester started, all of those chemicals we used to play with had been moved to locked cabinets.

Ahh those days.
