I figured since I've decided to start playing again after...well quite a long time I should get some advice on heading out to the field.
I'm pretty sure I was aiming to wear HP before and I still like the idea of being a heavy armored healing machine unflinching as critters bounce off my metal backside. Have there been changes that makes this totally unfeasible or otherwise really really not a great idea?
When training brawling is there any advantage to using a weapon (other then parry)? Like does the balance from the weapon help the non-shock maneuvers?
Also, any good suggestions for deflating my overstuffed vault and encumbered self? ;)

Welcome back!
Recently, a couple of critters have been released that empaths can actually fight without getting shock. You can tell which they are by Perceiving them.
There is an empath-only shop in Crossing where you can buy a stick to parry with, if you don't want to use a weapon. This same shop also sells compendiums and anatomy shops, which are great for training First Aid and scholarship. They also train empathy some.
Experience itself is a different beast from what you're used to. Check the Experience folders for that.
Also, it is possible to train more than one armor at once now, depending on the set-up you use. There is extra hindrance involved, but it is possible to train that down somewhat.
Consider using an arm-worn shield. Which shield sizes you can use depend on whether you're armor primary, secondary, or tertiary. Also, any shield can be Adjusted to arm-worn.

I'm pretty sure multi armor training and arm shields where around when I left. Heh, at least when I went to check my shield I was wearing it on my arm.
Right now I'm wearing some 450 stone Field Plate some random HP helm and leather gloves.
I was thinking of swapping over to leathers to allow me to actually train hiding in combat since I'm not sure how much HP skill you need to be able to hide in it and as my 6th survival that I'm catching up on I'm a little worried about it.
I ran down to shard to try play with boggles a few days ago...Well apparently I over estimated myself and didn't take into account my encumbrance (over burdened pre ease). I got myself pretty dead. I wish I had kown about the new depart items....Annoying digging things out of my grave.
I picked up a full set of charts the other day. I saw someone recommenced splitting them into 2 books of 9 and just flipping between books and pages and adding that into general skill training scripts. I'm not too worried about FA as I apparently have enough for 70th circle (39th currently with only empathy and teaching for a few circles)
I tried adding that into my perc health walk script and I just wasn't learning much of either empathy or scholarship, a little bit of FA, but like I said not really worried about FA. I think it actually managed to slow my empathy training down due to the extra RT from studying the charts.

I'd recommend picking up a manifest force scroll in addition to the standard empath ones when you get a chance. It'll help cut down the hits you take in combat. You'll do even better with the image you want with that spell.
As for the weapon, I'd suggest you train one anyway if you want to go the parry route. Combat is in the process of being rewritten and I fully expect that the broken state of brawling will be fixed also, so I'd plan to the future, not the horribly broken system it is now. It doesn't sound like you're big enough yet to worry about a little bad balance.
As for burden, use EASE... it probably won't be a big difference if you're seriously burdened, but it should help some. Otherwise I'd do an inventory of what you really need to be carrying with you and what's in your vault you'll never use.
