And there's no way to get rid of them because you happen to have an infected wound in an area of the game where no empaths care to mingle...
I sure wish that healing infections would be added to the code of auto-healers. It could feasibly take hours if not days to get this infection healed.
I would like to say that I personally think there has to be a bug in the code for getting an infection. I have a wound that I almost instantly leave to get healed by an auto-healer. I immediately leave the hunting area, make my trek to a healer's, lie down to be healed...and guess what. I've got an infection. I wouldn't have a problem with that if auto-healers would take the wound. I'm hoping that the auto-healers can be updated to take infections. Thank you.

I'm curious what area is populated enough to justify an autohealer that doesn't have PC empaths around. Personally I'm hanging around Hara lately ... granted I don't do much healing, I mostly work my survivals out here but I'm definitely available for infections and post-death scars. I can think of at least two other empaths who make an appearance on request.
Myannah and Winterrain keep M'riss covered nicely and I dare say there's a mule or two who might make an appearance if someone were to ask. Of course M'riss and Hara aren't the only place with fairly low populations but they're the only two I can think of with autohealers.
Forgive the question but do you wear a gweth? It's essential in poorly populated areas in my humble opinion.

P.S. I'm in no way arguing with the concept of autohealers taking infection, only trying to help with your quandry as it exists now.

I didn't make something clear and I should have. I thought of it after I posted, but decided not to repost. I don't play the prime instance of DR. And I was in Theren. I've seen rangers and barbs around, but have yet to meet an empath up here. I usually have to go to Haven for my 'pathing needs if the auto-healer can't help. Fortunately, there was someone at the guild in Crossing who was able to help just about 20 minutes ago. Usually I can't find anyone in the guild able to take disease either so I end up wandering around hoping I'll get lucky.
My barbarian in prime was in Theren about 3 weeks ago and needed disease healed. It took me a little over an hour and a trip to Rossman's to find an empath awake who could heal it. Just a couple of examples of why auto-healers should also be able to take disease (albeit at a high cost).

How about some sort of referal, empaths could sign up on a list to be available to take diseases. Auto-empath realizes your diseases, sends out a messenger to the closest 5 available empaths.
"I'm sorry, I cannot deal with your disease because of blah blah blah, so please try and reach so and so who can be found here."
Just a thought..
