Kitrinx, in another thread a little while ago you mentioned you might have a more recent version of the Crutch that had a 'patient notes' ability, but weren't sure whether it had been published on your website or not. I'm not sure you saw my response to that as I think my post got borked somehow... Anyway the latest version available is 1.0.14 and is dated 10/12/2001. It sounds older than the one you described.

At the moment, the source code for Crutch is the digital equivilent of a VCR taken apart into about 1500 peices. Sometime when I get a chance ill work on it a bit, but i'm doing a lot of other things now and since I don't play my empath much anymore Crutch is a low priority. There are some new features that I never released, but I can't promise when or if I'll get it out.

Understood, thanks ;) Just figured I'd ask about it since it came up.

Any chance of releasing the source code and letting other, less talented folks take a look and try tinkering?

The kraken stirs. And ten billion sushi dinners cry out for vengeance.
Kids! Bringing about Armageddon can be dangerous. Do not try it at home.

No, not likely. If you were to take the lines of code and print them as a paperback book, it would take up 250 pages. I'm a little hesitant to just hand over that sort of effort to people, especialy since I don't know what kind of things they would make once they could just copy the code to subclass the wizard. I've always been an advocate of responsible programing, and based on some of the suggestions I get, the public is not especialy responsible. It's important to never make anything that removes judgement from the player's hands, or that starts to hurt the fun of the game. ie auto-combat, auto-healer, etc.

As much as I would love to see a few small improvements to the Crutch (three or four maintenance tweaks, really), I can understand Kitrinx's reluctance to tackle working on it for another reason--the imminent release of DRII and Stormscape. There's not much sense making major revisions when there's a big chance the entire program might have to be rewritten in the near future.
However, Kitrinx, if you're really thinking about not ever working on it again, instead of releasing the source code, would you consider 'bequeathing' it to a successor developer of your choosing? It would be a shame if such a useful and important program were to cease development. Additionally, I think releasing Crutch 2.0 would be a perfect opportunity to start charging money for it ;)

I was rather hoping that stormfront would have something integrated into it to replace crutch. If it doesn't, it probably won't be too big a deal updating the subclassing part. However, DR2's healing system may or may not be signifigantly different. The reason I don't update it is mostly laziness. I don't want to charge for my stuff, people already pay a lot for DR. Even if I did, people would just find a way to pirate it around unless I had one of those elaborite and annoying online registration schemes. Very few people donate, so I just end up fixing things for myself and my friends as I feel like it and occasionaly updating my site. As for sharing the code, no. I don't really want anyone else working on it. Think of it as motivation to keep me interested =)

Well Kitrinx you certainly have my respect when it comes to not wanting to release your source code. I'm a programmer myself and I can completely understand your desire to not release it. I offer this in response: Could I perhaps write the code for a price tally which you could then implement? I'm flexible is style, let me know it you're interested. No risk of someone stealing your program.
Hope you like the idea.
