Composed of rock, the gargoyle is a statue come to life at the hand of an ambitious mage. Mostly irate at the world and grumbling to itself about anything from the state of the Elven nation to the weather, the gargoyle does not look so much inclined to fight as it is to curl up in a corner and look frightening. Still, it knows its task as a protector of its creator's domain, and will do its best to keep invaders from treading on its turf. |

well, from a necromantic perspective ... having actually created constructs ... ::cough::
how about borrowing one of our "friends" - and making a ladder of say what a newbie necro can make with QE, all the way to what Book, Xerasyth or Lyras could make.
This would have 2 advantages.
1. for empaths it would give somethin to hunt.
2. for necros you'd see more little dirt guys around, so others wouldn't KNOW when a dirt construct was in a room, that a necro PC was nearby. :-)
Or, Maybe newbie things could be little dirt blobs that would be kinda like the "slimes" in dragon-warrior and such.
progress to dolls, puppets, mannequins, golems. All of which would be in-genre. <no robots or borg, sorry>
Lileyew smiles kindly, "I'm afraid it's too late for you, my friend. Your fate is to be a Necromancer." Lileyew pats you on the back.

Re: Construct Critters on 02/15/2010 12:11 PM CST
Granite gargoyles were the first thing that came to my mind. The talking can be explained easily enough as coming from the mage or whatever that animates them.
And then there's black marble gargoyles:
>Crafted from lustrous black marble, the gargoyle is a statue granted life to serve as a guardian of its creator's domain. With a head and body of a lion, stunted draconic wings and a serpentine tail, the gargoyle is curiously elegant despite its incongruous parts. Sculpted muscles move with predatory grace, while razor-sharp claws and curving incisors promise lethal violence. A broad collar of intertwined adders is chiseled around its neck.
Also, what about the Mihmanan that used to be in the Armadillo area?
>Formed entirely of bleached bones, the olensari mihmanan is obviously no natural beast. Its joints seem oddly fused, as though the creature was carved rather than assembled. One clawed arm hangs loosely by its side while the other juts up and back, set much like the business end of a stout catapult. A jagged fragment of broken bone rests in this skyward hand, ready to be propelled forward in the blinking of an eye.
Shadow creatures such as Emaciated Umbramagus and Shadow Masters are another possibility, although the limitations on damaging them might make this a moot point:
>The emaciated umbramagus is an unnatural and alien beast, apparent from its bodily structure. Two skeletal heads are mounted atop a barren ribcage, and four boney arms arch out in a radial pattern. Its legs are impossible to see, lost in the swirling confines of a shade-filled vortex which the thing uses as a means of locomotion.
>The color of the space between the stars, the shadow master appears vaguely skeletal, displaying not only ribs but a skull-like head. Though the master is ever-shifting and apparently incorporeal, several distinctive features stand out, such as the lack of a lower jaw and the gleaming double row of solid-looking ivory fangs. Even more prominent are the sabre-length talons it wields on the ends of its wispy, black arms.
>Though obviously agile, the shadefield eviscerator is awkwardly hunched over in an exaggerated mockery of a humanoid's stance. Several deadly bone blades, each at least three times as long as its torso, dangle from its lithe form, set at the end of wispy arms. Jutting from this menagerie of shadows and jagged weaponry, a skeletal bovine head maintains a disturbing fleshless smile as it surveys the area.
I don't know anything about cyan mist, but:
>This transparent creature has no real form, though it usually maintains the appearance of a cloak. It floats effortlessly, passing through solid as if it were not there.
As previously mentioned, bone amalgams would be fun:
>It is virtually impossible to describe this skeletal creature. It appears to be an amalgamation of bones from a wide variety of creatures, all fused together and animated by some form of magic. While most of the bones are natural, a few have been carved or modified to fit better, or to be more effective as weapons.
And then there's black marble gargoyles:

Was thinking about existing creatures that might be flagged construct. I know many of these have been gone over before, but just putting them into groupings as I make my notes...:)
These first few, based only off the description of the creature, already seem construct-ed or animated, not sentient:

Elementals. After reading the treatise on different demons, etc. over in the events folder, seems like the argument could be made for the elemental beings to be sentient-less. While the following might not all be what that GM had intended, the descriptions of each make note of an element forming them (water, fire, etc.)

Not sure where 'shadow creatures' fall in. Many are tagged undead, but if an area is cursed and the insitgator of that curse was the one to form the shadow creatures, did they ever have sentience? Seems like a GM chimed in that they were 'alive', so wouldn't be good for us. But, they do seem (from descriptions) to be conjured/created as opposed to natural life.

I didn't add the invasion dolls onto the list, but I agree those would be an ideal 'tiered' system to put into place until more creatures can be made/flagged to fill in gaps.
Yey for more constructs!

>Aren't shadow masters created by moon mage enchantments?
Shadow masters are summoned extraplanar life, and so are devourers.
>Elementals. After reading the treatise on different demons, etc. over in the events folder, seems like the argument could be made for the elemental beings to be sentient-less.
Empaths still can't punch rats, and all known elemental life is at least as aware and alive as a rat is.

>> Not sure where 'shadow creatures' fall in. Many are tagged undead
The designation "shadow creature" refers to a creature of living shadow from the Plane of Probability. The stuff you linked to is all noncorporeal undead with descriptions that are just fluffy.
Shadow creatures aren't undead and aren't really cursed but operate under their own mechanics afaik. These mechanics are inconsistent but the intent is that you need light to harm them, which is why stuff like Bless works.

You guys have been awesome so far! I've received several construct critter ideas already, and they're great! Keep it coming!
Re: Gargoyles and Rock Guardians. Yes, I know it is frustrating that there is a distinction between the two of them, and from a player's perspective I can agree that it does not make much sense.
Please rest assured that I am working hard to either A) be able to explain more fully the differences or B) be able to do away with the differences. Neither of those things are going to happen tomorrow.
In the meantime, I see no reason to sit back and wait for one of those two things to happen. I intend to do what I can to introduce new critters to the game for you.
There is a tasty new construct on the way as soon as the hunting area is out of QC - some of you might have come face to face with one already - but be careful not to bite off more than you can chew. There are also at least two other totally different critters in development and several more being poured over to see where they might fit into the world. We're getting there!

How's this for a construct?
gargantuan bone golem:
A hideous amalgam of shattered, twisted, and fused bone, the fearsome hulk before you rises to the height of several Gor'Togs. Clearly no natural beast possesses a skeletal structure as horrific as this - with uneven limbs formed of irregular, contorted lengths of flesh-stripped bone. Its claws are incongruent and jagged, bearing the unmistakable crimson stain of dried blood. Only a Necromancer of considerable power and vileness could meld the deceased bodies of so many beasts into such a horrific construct.
These are in the infusion quest area in Shard.

How the boggles would teach for empaths, I'm not sure. But they are about goblin-level, or perhaps a teeny bit harder. It's the other critters you would have to watch out for there.
I was thinking that the abandoned farmhouse near the monastery could be turned into construct areas: Abandoned dolls, rabid dust bunnies, random collections of bone and mangy fur that might look like a rat if you look at it close enough. ;)

Boggles: You can hit them with 1 rank (they'll parry/block but you'll learn. Slow down a lot at 50. Hard cap at 57.
Guardians: I can hit them enough to move my weapons at 80 ranks with 60 agility. I think they slow down in the high 200's judging from training defenses on them. Maybe hard cap in low 300s? Not sure.
