I cast a Moongate to Grazhir to attempt to enter the ways. Instead of popping into the astral plane I opened a rogue moongate and died. The only difference from normal was that I was standing in a room with a shard.

There's a skill check involved in remote entry to the Astral Plane, which is substantially harder than the skill check to enter the Astral Plane through a shard.

You can enter and exit the astral plane more easily (as far as skillchecks are concerned) using teleport rather than moongate. If you fail the moongate skillcheck I'd recommend teleportation. Just don't forget to release your harnessed mana inside the AP before teleporting out. You'll also have to harness your protective mana inside after teleporting in.
