I wouldn't use the in combat version. At all. I see no point in not just retreating twice to make a quick predict over just standing at melee and getting beatdown to do it. Now if you add in some new functionality for it that'd be another story, but in the current system I'd always ret x2 and do my buisness over risking a beatdown for no gain.

Then I'd probably say don't bother. There's less than no reason to build a combat ability that is going to never get used in combat because it gets you killed.

<<Fiddling around with playing cards while someone is trying to kill you>>
You look up at a Dragon Priest assassin. Pick a card, any card....
you TKT them with the card they just drew. hmmm...
but i particularly envision the monks coming up with something like this.

>>Have you read the Kingkiller Chronicles? Kvothe is able to split his mind into multiple parts and focus on several things at once to use the type of sympathetic magic in their world.
Going off the extant history and lore of Moon Magery in Elanthia, I would guess that any fracturing of a Moon Mage's mind would not be voluntary, painless, or beneficial.

Stop being cute.
What were you trying to communicate? Because all I get is something about inviso which is not remotely relevant.

>>Keep in mind that in 3.0 retreating will not be quick.
Retreating with roundtime to get back to missile and then temporarily disabling everything via a snapped cast of Shadow Web (or some such) is still preferable to being completely defenseless at melee with several hungry critters. If it's a huge defensive penalty that will all but guarantee death when used in combat, it won't get used at all, unless you're back-training short staff in musk hogs or something. Certainly not with routine at-level hunting.

Re:Predict weather on 07/04/2012 07:45 PM CDT
So if in game:
The moon mage were to use something that gave them an invisibility or hiding stance, then used the predict ability. The problem of the opponent attacking, even if they had an advantage (because the predicting makes you do the whole, 'oh wait, let me see, wait a little bit," while he/she/it is hacking you to pieces).
So I am just suggesting perhaps there are ways to still get at the advantage, even if you have to do some precautions, like hiding or casting an invisibility spell. It'll still be dangerous because they can find you, dispell your invisibility or whatever while your in roundtime of the prediction, but it might make the ability more useful, and therefore used.

Meh, I'd still like the option, because there may be circumstances where I could use it. Most notably when backtraining/mining.

You'd make a great deal of people happy if you can pull that off. Most noteably WMs <who love bad weather for their spells> and bards <who can't use instruments currently without caress of the sun in bad weather>

Not Pyromancers. They hate bad weather, but yes... It should be so easy to see the weather that it should be doable in RT, IMO.

While some spells are penalized/boosted by bad weather, I think Elemental mana as a whole gets a boost from "bad" weather.

Not sure prediction is the answer to learning astrology in combat. However, yes I would suffer the penalty to be able to learn astrology in combat at this point I have to step out of combat to learn astrology and I hate it. To me if its a primary skill we have to have we should have the ability to learn it while we are in combat. I have tried the retreat and observe thing its a pain especially when there are alot of creatures in the room.

That argument isn't going to get you very far. There are LOTS of primary skills in the game, and not all of them can or should be learned in combat. Combat is already by far the most absurdly efficient way to train in the game.

I prefer predicting in combat over reading scrolls. If the penalty is death due to being "defenseless" then not only will you not be learning Astrology, you won't be learning the other skills you've locked from hunting. Retreat spam isn't so bad, even when I can only keep 3 at melee, having a 4th in the room when I predict won't get the 4th to melee to hurt me unless I skull.
