What does it mean when we say that there is a sect association with pillars and conduits? Is it just symbolic or do some sects find certain pillars and conduits to be easier to travel than others? If it's symbolic, what does the symbolism refer to?

So far as I am aware it is symbolic.

Perhaps the most blant one is Tradition / Dor'na'torna with it's ties to the Nomads and the Arid Steppe. I don't have the Play.net postings, but have two posts from Armifer and Bursaal on Elanthipedia that somewhat relate to your question:

Its symbolic and symbolic only, sects do not get bonuses to traveling specific shards.

The description of the conduit is resultant of the common ideas of the sects.

To be more clear, the description of the pillar itself, not the individual conduits to the shards.
