I'm wrapping up work on the Read the Ripples ritual (It still needs about half of it's messaging and then will need to go through QC, so don't read this as "Will be out tomorrow" or anything.) and since it's our first ritual spell in the perception school I need to add a temporary ritual foci for it (to be sold at the artificer in Crossing most likely).
If you'd like to make suggestions for what that should be - speak here now. This isn't a formal contest or anything - if I don't get any suggestions I like before I get to that stage of the project I'll figure something out, but I thought some of you might like to be involved.
What I need is a basic description of the container and a what the ritual component actually is.
For an example, here's the one for Earth Manipulation:
a silvery-white metal jar
And the actual component is "oravir paint".

FWIW my first thought was eye of newt too and how to turn it into a powder or something.
Currently I'm leaning strongly towards powered/crushed/something avaes as the actual component with no real preference for the container.

I just thought it'd be cute since it was kind of trope-y. Then I was trying to think of what the rune stone material used to be for clear vision... Then I was thinking of what sect would be appropriate for perception (G'nar Peth, probably) and what might go with that... sandstone > sand painting > cave painting > pigments > crushed minerals > azurite. Yeah, there's my thought process.
Eye of newt could be dried, powdered, mixed with some type of solvent/oil to act as a carrier.

Perception is the Nomad wheelhouse too :V I do like the idea of using pale aevaes powder though. A vivid cloud-lacquered box? I don't know how simple these should be.

Go take a look at the rest of them in the Crossing Artificer.
Fairly simple is a good guideline.

creamy thealstone powder flask
pale avaes rock dust
You uncork the decorative tip of the thealstone flask, sprinkling the pale avaes rock dust

Re: Want to make a foci? on 01/19/2016 04:25 AM CST
I'm a little confused. Why do we need an additional temporary focus beyond the neitrice powder? I thought a focus was supposed to work for all Lunar spells. Or do the temporary foci split off by spellbook for added incentive to get a permanent focus?
That said, I like stone powders -- perhaps something clear (like diamond or quartz) for Perception?
(Also I'm still catching up on the MM forums. What does this spell do?)

This is correct, foci come in two types currently: consumable and permanent.
Consumable ones are affordable, have a set number of uses, and generally work only for one specific spell book of the associated ritual spell(s) - in this case the Moon Mage Perception spell book.*
Permanent ones are realm attuned (mana type such as Lunar, Life, Elemental, etc), have unlimited uses, but are very expensive (140 plat range) and are not practical for newer players.
* There are some consumable foci which work for all spells, but they're rare-ish and not cheap. https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Item:Slender_flask_of_engraved_electrum
There's already several general Lunar magic foci, which are permanent, such as https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Weapon:Crystal-inset_oaken_staff_surmounted_with_a_witch_ball However, there are no consumable ones for the Moon Mage Perception book, which need to exist for the ritual spell to be usable by new players and people who just might not want to shell out 140+ plat for something like that.
Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

Not to mention the temporary foci have MUCH cooler messaging upon invocation than the general use foci.

100% agree. I would love to have a permanent version of the consumable ones, just for the messaging on several characters.
