By 20th circle (perhaps earlier), you should be able to SMITE foes with a powerful attack (with whatever melee weapon you're holding). This draws from your "smite pool." (You can check your remaining smites by typing POWER.)
If you've done any of the Sacred Insight quests, you have access to a special form of power perception. The syntax is PERCEIVE [ITEM], PERCEIVE THEFT, and PERCEIVE [PERSON].
