I'm just starting out as a Paladin and to be honest don't know much about these holy weapons. Thanks to Tisk's wagon re-opening, I couldn't resist training short staff (stout kneecapping stick). If I went so far as to make this my holy weapon (assuming I have the patince to carry through using it), would that be a waste of the gift?
I guess what I'm asking is, do many paladins use their holy weapons and what are the benefits? If I choose to make a weapon that isn't so great one will i regret it?
Thanks,
Hobbles

When Holy Weapons first came out, only edged weapons could be made Holy. Recent changes have allowed both blunt and SWAPPABLE weapons to be our Holy Weapon. So.. yes, a staff could become your Holy Weapon. Remember however, that making a weapon Holy does NOT improve its stats, especially not its construction, so you run the risk of damaging the "holy stick" too much to be repaired or possibly destroyed trying to parry.. and poof.. no more Holy Weapon.
So, yes, blunts can be the Holy Weapon. But a weapon that is susceptible to breakage would NOT be a good choice.

I think holy weapons are mostly fluff. Much like a bag of door knobs or some other toy weapon they are fun when you get it them but not what you?d use day in day out. Mine is a dust collector in the vault.
They say you shouldnt use forged because the GMs wont replace a weapon they don?t have the stats of. That why people tend to go for the fest/quest type since they are better than store bought but have a template that the GMs can access. If the GM is willing to replace it you might get stuck with a store bought bastie rather than the super forged special metals monstrosity bastie you paid lots to get special order. Then you get to decide if swapping it out is worth the swap weapon quest and its year long timer.
The item registration thing might help with forged holy weapons and replacing them but that hasn?t happened yet and may never come about.
You don?t use verby weapons because youd loose the verbs. Weapons can only hold 1 script so it either the verbs script or the holy weapon script. Since there aren?t any holy weapon verbs you loose out.
There is a problem with swappable weapons but I?ll let Maece explain that one.
Since stats and skills improve you will want to upgrade your weapons after a while. Either you stick with a holy weapon that you have out grown and waste your abilities or choose the swap quest and its year long timer. Or you get a weapon that is way to big to use effectively and wait to grow into it so that its not a waste of your talents for many circles.
The GMs say that holy weapons get a bump from being holy. Apparently the GMs also said back in the days that pali spells wouldnt go target so you never can tell. In this case people experimenting have found a small increase in damage after getting holy. I never noticed much difference myself, maybe the critter took 1 less hit to die.
We have also been told that holy weapons damage grows over time as the pali grows. If it grows fast enough then upgrading might not be a problem. If not then you will reach a point where you are wasting your abilities. I dont know about anyone experimenting to check the growth rate.
More people used to leave their holy weapons in the vault but auto ward helps reduce the concern about loosing them. I generally don?t carry things I don?t expect to use or need so dust catcher it is.
The blessed weapon part is nice but I don?t hunt undead. If I need to fight undead and cant get a cleric to bless then id pull it out of the vault. Most likely id use blessed weapons first with the holy weapon as a backup.
The charge runs out quick but if you live near a working recharge point then youd probably hunt with your holy weapon. Otherwise your looking at an hour (or more) round trip assuming you cant get a gate. I?ve spent some time in shard and my advice is gweth for a gate but plan on taking the gondola. That the Crossing recharge point, the one that would serve the most people, is broken and has been from the start tells me palis and their holy weapons are way down on the list of things to do.
I wouldnt bother with the quest until your 55th circle or higher. Over the years there have been a lot of combat ?improvements? with the results being we fight worse, we wear armor worse, we cast worse, and we handle swarms worse. If the quest critters are equally dumbed down then everything is fine but I don?t think that has happened. So with every game fix that makes us less effective fighters the quest gets harder.
If you do run into a holy weapon problem and need GM assistance then look for Nehros. After 6 weeks of broken weapon I?d met a few GMs but none of them helped me. For the most part it was understandable since holy weapons are an obscure pali thing so the non-pali GMs were out of their element. They told me that themselves. GM Nehros is the one that finally fixed things and also told me about the 1 script per weapon limitation.
The sad things about holy weapons is are that they are so narrowly designed. You have rigid rules governing them and they don?t interact with our glyphs, our protects, or our leading. You get a high maintenance blessed weapon with a small damage boost and some nifty hit descriptions. With such limitations I dont see the point in using it. Im glad i got it but its more checking off the boxes of pali things to get. Its like the light glyph, nice to have on the rare occasions I need it.
