How do you pick the right shield? on 01/14/2003 04:04 PM CST

I was wondering what type of shield one should pick based on their skill. Not caring about hinderance, what type of protection shield should someone use from 50-100, from 100-150, so on and so forth? At what point does it become effective to weild a wall shield? Obviously having a tower shield when you have 10 ranks in shield is pretty ineffective because you can't manuever well enough with the thing to use it's protection range to the best of it's ability.

Technically, you should start at wall shield and move down to a target shield.

This is because, with enough ranks, a target shield is as effective as a wall shield (at those lower ranks)

Of course, if, at X ranks, a target shield is as good as a wall shield (at those lower ranks), imagine how good a wall shield will be. Heh.

I'm using a tower shield for now, because, with DA up, it's basically a wall shield.

I found hinderance of little importance as a paladin till about 30th, stick with the theren tower shield (not the merchants oak tower shield that thing is a piece of junk)

if your concerned about hinderance... ironwood bucklar from shard

course if you can afford an expensive shield go for it.

Actually, the largest majority of my shield skills were learned with the plain, ordinary, free reavers oval shield. The reason I liked using it early on was that any damage to it cost me nothing as I was learning. If a critter broke it or I died and lost it, replacements were easy to get.

I'm going to strongly disagree with the assessment that with enough ranks a target shield is as good as a wall shield. If I'm underhunting anything will work. If I hunt something where I actually have concern that I'll be harmed, the protection range of the shield is absolutely critical. If you can handle the burden/encumberance issues of holding a 600 stone piece of metal in your hand during combat, the wall shield is going to outperform the target shield in virtually any situation.

Keep in mind that my frame of reference on the issue is with true savant ranks of shield and slightly less than savant evasion. In a multi situation, the ironwood buckler or any of the other assorted small shields allow me to get hit more frequently and the hits are more severe. This is with over 40 in reflex and agility if you believe that might play a role.

You can get a partial block with a shield or weapon the same as a partial evade. You won't always see the messaging for it but it happens all the same. It used to be that blocking was a hit or miss proposition. That is why some folks still think you need to maximize your evasion to increase your combat effectiveness. Evasion is checked before the other defenses (this has always been the case). At any rate.. test for yourself and report your findings.

Just remember Shields do get damaged quite often compared to any other piece of armor, and if it is expensive it will cost a fortune to fix.

Expensive shields being shields people pay 400 plat for, not actually having high apprasials. :P
