I'm currently a light chain wearing WM with around 300 armor/evasion, and 55 shield. I've been helping a new character train and was wondering if taking up a shield in earnest would do me any defensive good?
I mean, with around 300 in other defenses, how much shield would I have to have for it to outweigh the penalty to evasion I would suffer due to its hinderence?
I can currently get down to insignificantly hindered with YS, if that matters.
I'm talking defense against ranged/magic mostly (melee combat I'm still gonna go 100% evasion, 83% parry).

P.s. I can't parry ranged either, of course.
Actually it probably would. There are some attacks that cannot be evaded that can be shield-blocked. I've been backtraining some shield myself, and those character that I have that have not dropped shield don't get hurt when hunting at level.

Death from above spells and effects (burn, lightning bolt) bypass shield.
Some attacks are only shield blockable(poloh'ihz tail sweep that im aware of).
How much shield ranks will make up for the hinderance depends on the shield you pick. I would get an ironwood targe from shard for your first 100 ranks, then switch to a kite shield till 150, then a tower shield from there on.

The difference in hinderance between buckler and targe is near-nothing.
Get an ironwood buckler. If you're going to buy a targe, just get a target shield from goblins. Almost the same thing and free.
