I already spoke to an In Game GM about this and he said to post it here.
so after about 7-8 years of having a baby wolf I finally got it to grow up.
well the other day I had my wolf tracking someone... and they went into a non trackable non locatable room. and I couldn't find them to make my wolf sleep, I kept whistling for it and all I got was "You whistle loudly for your Companion" normally the wolf comes back to me. well after long enough of this the wolf ran off. I was wondering if this is a mechanics issue or just the way it is.

Thanks for the heads up on the issue. There's not much that we can do to prevent this stuff right now, but it is helpful to know what the weird-ities are for troubleshooting purposes. In this case, I found Purnay's wolf, so all's well that ends well :-)

Does this mean you found it.. alive.. still grown.. and gave it back?
If so wow.. that's a first. How many years of "sorry, it's gone for good, we can't find it" have we heard about every cause of a lost wolf with never once a success story? Heh, first time is awesome.
If not.. I'll shut up and go hide.
Lot of issues with wolves. Lotta rooms they don't like to follow into. Some if you go into with wolf awake, wolf magically poofs in < 20 seconds. Always had bad luck with wolves and trails too. I lost like 20 wolves before I gave up keeping them awake, and started only using wolf to learn AL (which got me to 350) - and got me a young wolf too, after 300 ranks of waking it only to lock AL. Now I only ever wake it if I have meat in my hand, to send it to find someone so I can track em down.
Looks like they may well be in good hands though.

I still recommend you use all of your precautions - when I play, I am afraid to even move with my wolf, which of course is why it never grows :-P
While I did replace Purnay's wolf at the age it was when it was lost, realize that had he 40 hours on it at that point, that time would have been lost. I can only give you a replacement companion who is at the beginning of that general life age.
I realize that companions have been buggy a long time and are overall a very frustrating system that has SO much potential. We'll get it fixed someday (I'm not going to use the dreaded "soon" word .. yet.) but in the meantime, I am going to try to make it as tolerable as possible within the weird-ities it has.
Companion replacements are going to remain very rare, but in an obvious buggy situation that my research shows there is nothing the player could have done to avoid it ... then we may think about it. This does not mean that if you go in a building and leave your raccoon outside so it runs away that I'll replace it. I still will not do so :-P It just means that in extremely weird cases, I'll do my best.
Please continue to post your questions here as they come up and we'll look into it.
Thanks!

Audacia, you are wonderful! If when you all do begin working on wolves, please head to Elanthipedia and read an article someone posted of mine. Had all the rooms I could think of at the time, that wolves can't survive.
And I think the timer is stuck on Lucky! I'm positive I've had him out for over 80 hours now and he still refuses to grow! However, I think the baby stage is the cutest stage. The young and mature wolves just sit or sometimes howl. Would be nice if they would every once in a while, forget their dignity and pounce or chase its tail?
