There are snake that live in the desert that never drink water as they get all the liquid they need from their prey. If you find a cactus then you've found a good source of water plus if you dig deep enough you'll find some water. There are some folks who live near various deserts and will venture into them they just happen to know where to stop for water and are willing to do things that some people might find distasteful...Is that any harder than living on a mountain? You still need to find water, food and shelter.

The Question isn't which is harder in general. It if a Desert title makes sense for rangers. The only real why to explain this is by finding a relationship between desert life and certain skills. Yes you can argue for days which is harder to live and survive in but the end fact is. When thinking up requirements for titles if they don't make sense then why have them? Like the suggested titles below took the Warden Reqs and added swimming for river and climbing for mountain. Because any water/river region is going to require swimming, and any mountain region is going to require climbing. Desert is a bit tougher to pin down exactly what you would require as a skill to survive.

Maybe Escaping? I don't really know since I am not the most knowledgeable about Desert life. I know its dry and hot or that would take the skills below in some situations and probably more of the foraging skill then any other swimming or climbing if you wanna find food. Vegetation would be sparse and difficult to find as it should be. I'd like to hear more people thoughts on what Desert titles would incorporate for reqs. I said combats and overall just out of respect for the Outcast Ranger Taber who was truly a master of survival from what I was able to Observe in his short time in Ilithi.

I have no clue if the reqs below are what were used these were just my ideas of what they would be.

River Warden: Diversity Title
At least 300 in Scouting
At least 250 in Foraging
At least 125 in Animal Lore
At least 300 in Evasion
At Least 300 in Swimming

Mountain Warden: Diversity Tttle
At least 300 in Scouting
At least 250 in Foraging
At least 125 in Animal Lore
At least 300 in Evasion
At least 300 in Climbing

"It is unfortunate that many people equate deserts with a hostile environment that conspires against human life. In the popular media, desert areas seem to be considered to be at the top of the wilderness list for danger. The historical fact is, however, that the human race was cradled in arid lands and people are well adapted to survive in deserts. Learning to be part of the desert's ecosystem, and not view it as an antagonist is the first step of desert survival. I teach desert survival classes for Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, and our class philosophy is not to fight the desert, but to become part of its ecosystem. Being prepared is an obvious benefit."

First paragraph of the first link that comes up when you search 'desert survival' on Google. Desert titles should be available just from being able to find things in a desert (foraging/perception/scouting/animal lore?).

I'd enjoy desert titles a lot.

Arid Scout?
Desert Dweller?
Snake Snatcher?
Cactus Hugger?

I don't know, title creation is for creative people. But I'm sure there is some way to justify desert titles.

Perception would be my guess. Mirages, getting lost, rolling dunes, and hidden enemies/critters/supplies are typical of all deserts whereas floods, cliffs, and sinkholes aren't.

We have at least 4 races that have part if not all of their members supremely adapted to live in the desert. S'kra are definitely. Some S'kra are actually even rangers. They have a town out there. In addition, if you read the in game books, you will find that there is a whole subset of the Elves and Prydaen that are also desert dwellers. Finally, the Olvi were told that ALL of the lands were their's to live in. I would assume that includes the Desert.

It would make sense that Rangers, if anyone, would have desert titles and know how to live out there.

I would be in favor of having certain races claim the desert title. That for sure would make sense. Other than that, I guess our arguments seem to be us trying to figure out what basis do the DR GM grant certain titles. Is it guild background, skill relationship, or a combination. Till we figure out which one it is we'll be going in circles.

I live in the great American desert known as the great plains. It's eazy to survive here, yes, even counting in the blizzards & 115 degree summer heat if you know what your doing. Plop me into deep south swamp, and I could likely survive, but nothing like my "home turf". I've also lived in sothern AZ & the Rockies. The key is knowledge. Real life survival is more like a lore skill frankly. But you also need the hunting, fishing (Yup, they are in deserts), trapping, foraging, etc to backup the knowledge.
