I'm in the market for a laptop and I've search all over the internet trying to find that high-endish laptop for that incredible "I'm going out of business" price. I thought I'd ask you all if you knew any places to look. Some features I'm looking for a is:

at least a 15.4 inch screen
good video card
fast hard drive
either and AMD X2, intel core duo, or intel core 2 duo processor

thanks all for whatever help you find!

Try the Dell and HP outlets. Refurbs, scratch and dent, etc. Comes with full warranty.

You can install Linux on Macs, so it's not so bad.

The Apple OS runs on a Unix core.

And you can run the windows OS on the new intel Macs. I don't know of a more flexible hardware set up.

They still scare me. Break a Mac and it will always take much more effort to fix. Give me my consistently buggy, easy to fix PC.

I know a lot of people don't go for the apple-care type packages, but for me, if I have a $2k+ laptop, the 180 dollar protection plan is worth it. Never really needed the plan, but if something ever did happen, its worth the cost just so I can say here, -you- deal with it.

I've strayed away from laptops for that very reason. PC towers can be so small now that they're as good as a laptop if you have a nice portable flat panel. Not to mention the full keyboard and mouse. Plus I don't see portability as a good balance for limiting upgradeability, performance, and convenience of repair. I don't like macs for the same reason. If my board goes out, I want to go spend $100 on a new board, not have to buy a new computer because it's all fused together into one package. If I find my memory isn't sufficient for the newer games, I want to be able to plop a couple more sticks in instead of buying a new computer... and so on and so forth

lol, see that's the thing, I don't want to do that. I want to be able to fixit in 24 hours rather than waiting 2 weeks on shipping and fixing and shipping it back. I'm not saying that it's the best scenario for everyone (as it's probably not), but that's just what I want.

Though I drool at YASSE every time someone mentions it.

Just to limit the help I'm getting NUDGE I don't want an apple, I'm looking for a PC laptop. Sorry for the confusion. Keep the ideas coming, this is a great help. Also, do you all think refurbished items are still worth it?

What do you consider serious work? Is there something you can do on Windows you can't do in Linux?

If you only use Linux to play around, it is your lack of information regarding the OS.

I don't swear by refurb deals, but if you're on a budget there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Refurb offers a great price on an almost certified new piece of equipment. From a major manufacturer like Dell or HP you will almost be promised a better part than if you bought new. This is simply due to the fact that they have a percentage of parts they test for quality. With a refurb part, it snuck through that test somehow and landed on someone's desk broke, which got sent back and replaced for that person. They take the old part back, make it work (guaranteed testing) and resell it for cheap since they can't put it back as "new" You may not have the warranty or quality assurance as you would with a new part, but you have a guarantee that it went through a technicians hands and was verified working when it left.

I personally deal mostly in new parts because of the service guarantees, but I do recommend refurb when the budget comes to mind

My idea of "serious work" is repairing other PC's. The GUI tools are easy to get to, intuitive, and I'm a visual person, so the charts and graphs do a lot for me. It also helps to be able to troubleshoot a problem with a PC if you are able to replicate the software issue that caused it, which just doesn't work on across platforms for obvious reasons. I do have some linux tools to bypass windows security features like the admin password for those occasions when you get a box that you know nothing about that's "locked down" but primarily windows is more beneficial for me since the vast majority of computer users use a windows platform

I still get many of the systems I buy through the Dell refurbished deals.
The important parts of the laptop -
Memory - 2+Gigs
Video card - as big as they get and you can still afford.
Keyboard - go for a full keyboard with a number pad, I made the mistake of settling without and regret it.
Screen size - small = light and expensive and hard to read, big = heavy and hard to carry around through airports, etc. if you are a traveller pick small, if you are using it as a desktop replacement choose 17" widescreen -
Less important
Speed - There will always be something faster.
HD size - unless you want to carry lots of huge games or movies even the smaller ones out there should be enough.
Included Programs - you can download the equivalent shareware for most of what you need for nothing.
