I've just returned to DR after a few years away. I went to talk to Kalika and after leveling she told me that I was ready to learn a new spell and to ask her about magic. I asked her about magic but she tells me that she doesn't trust me and to come back. Is this a bug or is there something I have to do to gain her trust?

Everyone is on a spell preview so while that lasts you know every ranger spell. SPELL will show you which spells you know and the abbreviation for them. http://elanthipedia.org/w/index.php/Main_Page will show you almost everything you'll ever want to know about DR and more specifically what's changed (listed on the main page).

To expand a little, since DR 3.0 was just released, all guilds are on 'spell preview' because there is a lot of testing, and balancing, to do. During the preview you cannot choose spells, so the guild masters get a bit wonky about asking them about magic/etc.
During this time, you can prep and attempt to cast any spell (excepting any quested spells if your guild has them, rangers don't). Spells are now broken into difficulty groups of introductory (easiest), basic, advanced, and esoteric. Introductor will take 0-5 ranks to cast, and esoteric will usually take 230+ ranks.
You may run into a spell that tries to prepare at hundreds of mana. This is a new ritual spell type. You will want a focus, which will bring the mana cost down to something sane.
I've included a couple of useful links at the bottom of the page here. Elanthipedia is a player-run wikipedia type resource, I strongly suggest reading through the magic 3.0 stuff if you haven't. And the 'what's new' page can be helpful to see, er, what changed while you were gone, by year.

Thank you both for the answers. I've been spending a good deal of time on elanthipedia reading up on the changes in 3.0. Knowing that I didn't do something to upset Kalika and that there's nothing I have to do to fix it is what I really needed to know.
Again, thank you both for your responses.
