Hai, I'm new to the guild, and play in TF.

couple of questions
does kneeling help skinning?
is a "skinning" knife better than any other kind of knife when skinning?

Thanks,
Colossus

Welcome to the guild.

Here's some of my experiences ...

If you are border line on being able to get a skin, kneeling will help. If you can get the skin, it won't help get a better one. No proof on this, but that's how it feels to me.

If you can't get the skin, a skinning knife or other LE is great to use until you can get a skin. Once you can get a skin regularly, switch to a bigger blade to decrease your chances ... this will help you learn more (less monetary gain tho).

Agility helps skinning, I think that the room charisma does as well. I notice a change in skinning when different folks are in the room. Strength/Stamina are big also to keep your burden down (helps swimming, climbing ... evasion). The stats depend a bit on your race as to which ones are "cheap" to train.

Hope this helps, Im sure there will be lots of opinions. Luck to ya.

btw young rangers...
heggarangi frogs are very nice, don't seem to hit as hard as rats, and in about 8 hours of scripting them (i am a TF'er) i've managed this..

You can start getting trophies when you get the ability to arrange. This depends on your skinning ranks, normally 100. You can also throw up a HOL to decres this number, the amount of skinning need to arrange with HOL up is based on how good of a cast you can do with it.

And even with arrange, you will not get a trophy everytime, that depends on your skills and what you are skinning.

Be well

Just don't get confused between a perfect skin and a "bloody trophy."

Hrm, looking for some clarification.

I thought we were told that using the wrong tools in order to make it harder didn't teach us more, it just made it harder...

Much like how swimming used to teach more if you made it harder to do with burden (which has been fixed, because they didn't intend it to work like that)

Is it buggy or has it been changed while I was gone?

You could also hold a weapon in your hand to climb a tree and make it harder, thus learning more... but I hear that was changed as well because they didn't intend for it to work like that (I could be misinformed, I haven't tried it)

I distinctly remember Treveri telling us that using the wrong tool (like a Broadsword over a Skinning knife) was not the way he wanted us to learn a skill, though.

That's certainly the new mentality for skill learning (along with bonuses not making things teach less), and as things are rewritten, they're being brought into accord with this. However, not everything has been redone yet.

Skinning hasn't been changed yet, so getting a medium skin teaches you better than a skillful skin.

Myself and a couple of others have done some testing on this. Holding sword/shield doesn't appear to extend the cap (i.e. If a climbable only teaches to 100 w/out holding anything, it will only teach to 100 whilst holding something). However, it will increase your mindstates quicker holding items. For example, w/out holding anything it took me apprx 160 climbs through the logs in lang to ML. While holding a shield and sword, took me apprx 120 climbs.

Swimming was changed so that intentionally hurting your chance to swim (ie adding burden) would not help you out.

That will likely be totally true when jent gets around to reassessing skinning, and even with the old system it's partially true. Using a broadsword to skin would help only by jacking difficulty, but doesn't raise the cap so if you are above the cap, you don't learn diddly. And even under the cap, the boost to exp just doesn't seem to show until you are squeezing out the last few ranks anyway, a time when you'll likely learn a LOT better by just finding something else to skin.

No confirmation on that, just the observations of myself and a lot of other people I've talked to about it or read about back in the day when I was still new to the Guild and they had a big debate on it.
