You could move up to badgers/Poths north or crossing. Goblins would teach but they would swarm and kill you most likely. Your problem seems your armor is ahead of your weapons, so you are going to stop learning armor soon (rats teach to just about 22) but you still have some weapons training to do. Musk hogs would be okay, if you can get them alone. Boars are a bit much (found in the area near the vineyards and the farmhouse-rats/silverfish in the house-boars/hogs on the path outside.)
I would suggest you stay until you stop learning weapons good then move up to badgers/poths if you want to stay in crossing or goblins out the north gate in riverhaven. Without knowing race and stats, the goblins out the west gate can get ugly real quick. Goblins would be doable a bit better when you get your HE up to your LE ranks. LE can kill, just takes longer and in a swarm you need the heavy firepower. When you go to goblins out the west gate, stay toward the orchard.

Or, go to Haven and hunt frogs for a bit. They're in a wilderness setting, so there's no hit to your bonus, and they teach more than rats. Also, I don't think they swarm (at least not like gobbies). Finally, they're "natural" creatures, so they will work your evasion better (but parry less) than goblins do.

<<Why would you tell a 5th circle ranger to stay in rats?
Didn't say he had to stay in shipyard rats. He can hunt in the farmhouse which is neutral or Frogs if he wants to move to Haven. Most of the time, I only circle once I can circle to 5th with a baby ranger. Never had problems with my bonus playing in the shipyard. Except now you find me in the farmhouse. Until I get close enough with scouting to move to haven.
<<Wood Troll level.
They would kill him quick. With 40's in all the combats they still dinged me and a swarm, which he won't be able to retreat from will kill dead. His highest weapon is LE at 19. He would have trouble with goblins parrying or dodging many of his attacks. Poths/badgers would be a good choice as well, they just didn't gen fast enough for me.

Goblins north gate of riverhaven. They don't swarm and you'll get some boxes. So skinning disarm and picking even tho picking no longer matters.
Or crossing north gate poth and badgers. Your bow skill will probably let you take a trollkin if you've mastered the art of retreat loading and firing. Otherwise beware the halberd wielding buggers.

Definitely move up to Pothanits and Badgers. But consider relocating to Riverhaven.
If you head up to Riverhaven, try out the Wild Boars in addition to the Heggarangi Frogs. (Watch out for the Boobries in this area). You should be able to survive in Boars with good tactics and you'll learn quickly. Also, Salt Crabs (in city) and Scarlet Crayfish (out the west gate) in Riverhaven should work for you. The Goblins out the North gate don't swarm as much as the ones in Xing and are a good source of boxes.
