So I've been working on my longbow skill. I'm only 6th circle working on 7th. I've been fighting Crossing globlins, the ones without weapons. Soon as I get too many things in the room I can't seem to keep retreating. Then the goblins start to get good hits and down I go. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? Am I doing anything right? Do I just suck a lot? Any bow advice would be great. Thanks.

Reflex is what helps you retreat from critters. When you are using a bow, your evasion goes to pot (read: is bad). I am not sure if just holding one does it, but aiming and such does. Check your stances, make sure you are not parrying, but your evasion is at 100. Wounds, encumbrance are all important. And it is easier, no matter how big you are, to only have one or two in the room. I usually work the bow on one, and if two or more show up after, I put it away, kill all but one, and start again. It is tedious, but safe.

Just holding a bow affects your ability to retreat. Try wearing your longbow and then retreating. Also, your armor hinderence affects your ability to retreat. You may have to just suffer for a bit until you build up enough skill in armor, or try going back to rats to learn armor.

I'm glad to see you've found a solution!
There is something else you might want to know: These goblins aren't like the ones of the distant past. They will fight smarter and wear their armor right. You might be interested in hunting an unarmed critter eventually, such as pots and badgers, or perhaps even boars.

Hangback doesn't seem to be very useful; it gets it my way a lot. I have longbow as primary and ME as secondary, training to 7th right now.
My general strategy has been to aim and fire (I can't snap-fire on goblins successfully yet, though I do on rats and hogs), and if I can't retreat anymore, I'll put away my bow, lug out my cutlass, and flip my parry stance up to 80 and defend until I can retreat out.
I can't say it's the best way, but my longbow is being worked not too shabbily, and I haven't died hunting yet.
Incidentally, does anyone know what it takes for me to use that poached shot I've read about? I can't seem to stalk creatures. Not even rats.

Before I say anything else, welcome to the Ranger's Guild. You will find yourself facing a mighty challenge- but I believe you are a match for it.
Hiding and stalking can be hard to learn at first. You will be hinderred by your armor as well as your lack of skill. But if you hide and advance your prey while in hiding, you will learn. Eventually you will be able to hide and poach.
I noticed you mentioned rats. If you are no longer a newly-joined novice, you need to get out of town- which means that shipyard rats are no longer good prey for you. Although there are places with black rats (identical in all things but color) and hogs- which are about the same strength as rats.
I will leave it to the elder rangers to offer deeper details- but again, be welcome. And remember- No Ranger Stands Alone.

And an additional piece of advice, if you're up to it (I did this and found it very helpful).
Fighting rats, take advantage of the fact that they don't really do any damage, and train up to 32 in everything against them- weapons, parry, multi, shield (if you train one, I'd advise you do). That is where they stop teaching, but you can walk out of there with a lot of stats with no real penalty.
As for stalking, this is part of that advice too. If you get your armor up to 32 that will help you along your way to stalking critters, as the hinderance of your armor is trained off, making stalking easier. You'll need to raise stalking a bit, too, but once you start succeeding all the time, you won't fail to stalk anymore. You may get seen, but it won't involve a roundtime like your current failures.
Hope this helps :)

Just to let you know, engagement, retreat and most notably hangback will be getting revamped eventually, when Ssra gets to it. He also specifically told us at SimuCon that Rangers are getting a piece of the action ... we are to be the KINGS of hangback. :-D

The easiest way to get the same thing without the roundtime and without nearly as much chance of failure is to make a short simple script.
Loop:
match loop closes to pole range on you. (no, I'm not sitting at my comp, and cant remember the exact messaging)
match loop closes to melee range on you.
put ret
matchwait
There are other things you could add, but that would keep you hanging back so you dont have to keep typing it while in combat.

I was taking a walk in the park when this post said I stole its purse. I tried to get away, but it just kept on coming. So I had to beat it to death with this purse I found.

My opinion, get outa goblins (assuming Crossing gobs), I hate those things. Head out the north gate and try your had at Pots and badgers. No boxes or coins but they don't swarm as much and teach very well. By the way you can only poach quadrupedal creatures. Careful how much armor you wear, sometimes less is more if you can drop your hindrance you'll be better able to stalk.
Anyway welcome to the guild, its a great place to be!
