Where do people go from here? I haven't quite reached the end of viable training in bristles but I like to look a few steps ahead... So far the most promising critters look like seords and celps. Raiders seem to be another option, but that rules out skinning, which I've been trying to work hard. The others have their issues also, however. Seords and their magic, celps and their non-aimability (seemingly especially problematic for Rangers, lots of whom are ranged primary). It also seems the only Ranger-friendly rooms in celps have pretty low life mana, for whatever reason.
So the question is, what would people recommend? I'm probably looking at about 415ish defenses and sub-400 weapons by the time I leave (sbow closer to 400, HE a bit behind that), hide and stalk nearing 600, skinning probably around 400ish. I tried out celps and do okay, it just takes a good while to kill them because of the no-aim thing, which causes problems because of their swarming. I make a conscious effort to try to keep parry up to par, which makes seords rough if I have to turn down evasion to train it. Anyone have any suggestions or advice to throw my way? Thanks-

Vision I'm in the same boat. Pretty much capped bristle's in evasion.
I tried Celps out and the no aim thing was a pain in the butt with just under 300 ranks in longbow and I couldn't kill them fast enough with 300+ ranks of HE and 2HE. They did teach evasion really nice though.
Other options are Germs, which teach a bit higher than Pecs, they swarm, teach skinning well and drop boxes but they are inside so they start at pole; which can make multi a pain, and they cannot be webbed.
Seords as you mentioned, but the LB they cast is just stupid and doesn't teach for crap; I was up there a while back with just over 400 evasion fully spelled up dancing with 2 just fine for about 30 minutes; then one walks in and blast my chest out with that damn LB. IMHO not a viable hunting ground because of the LB.
Treks and Hunters - They would fill the niche between Pecs and celps, but they really don't swarm very well and no skinning and the boxes are hard as hell and pay very little.
I was also suggested the new critter in the cleric quest area, and the giant tree things on hara, havent hunted in either place but worth a shot.
I hear the cleric quest critters are about the same level as

Oh i forgot about Dragon Priest in shard also; they are ok sorta. I forgot what spelled they casted but they use chain armor and i wanna say HE weapons. Swarmed ok with two of us in there, but i don't remember them teaching evasion as well as i would like when i had 400 evasion.

Ssra since you are over here I wanted to know if you were open to discussion of removing seords LB; i will refer the question to the proper critter folder, but when they had thier magic taken away everyone was hunting them; now very few can actually hunt them due to the overpowered LB and it not teaching evasion when dodged.

Your best bet is to hunt shadow beasts. The stalking will suffer, but they teach very well at this skill range. It's a royal pain getting in and out for healing though, so if you can bring an empath with you it's always a plus...even then the safe rooms are not the quickest things in the world to get to.
Like was said before, Seords don't teach well (I think mostly because they use alot more magic then they do conventional attacks) and you won't survive the LB's...they just are not worth it.
The only other real option besides shadow beasts is to milk bristle's for as much as you can. When you do make the jump, your stealth is more then enough, and that's what's important. Keep yourself spelled up, and web them right before you shoot em. They can claw out of the webs, but the initial hit to their defenses should be enough for you to take them out with no more then 3 dual load snipes.
Gimme a hollar on IM's if you need help, I'll be leaving there soon.

Awesome, thanks for all the advice folks. Like I said, I still have a bit to go in bristles, so I'm not making the move just yet, but definitely got some ideas on where to go.
Ssra, I know in the Shard/Ilithi folders, some GM (I wanna say Ghesil, but I could be waaay off) was talking about adding higher hunting to the area behind Graev's Gate... Any chance you and Oolan could cook something up that's a bit more Ranger-friendly than the current options for around this hunting level? Stalkable, aimable, skinnable, etc? Seems like it'd be a popular addition.

Also, I can shoot bees.

Most likely yes!.. I know if you train shield a lot its blockable but... there are so many factors what go into the critter magic VS player, that its hard to say exactly what is the issue. I think the most problem for some is by time you can effectivly dodge the LB, you are beyond the teaching.
Those who pride themselves on being the Hunter can easily become the prey.

Re: Beyond bristle peccs: Basilisk report on 07/30/2005 10:46 AM CDT
Well, basilisks down in the swamp working out pretty well so far. Definitely much better than bristles. Location's quite annoying, but workable. Oodles of life mana, and there seems to be an area that only gens basilisks and no shadowbeasts or whatnot. They train pretty much everything except stalking, but I guess I can handle that. They also drop metric tons of loot, which is definitely a Good Thing(tm). They do seem to have durn good eyes as they see me snipe every so often, but I can deal with that also. Means they should teach hiding for a looong while. ;) Gen rate is a bit sporadic, seems to be 2 per hunter, usually another gens pretty quickly after killing one off but every once in a while it'll take a bit. Also have some sort of WvW stare attack (i guess they are basilisks, after all) which I haven't been hit by so far, but even shrugging it off causes a 2 second RT, which is kind of annoying. In all, a very decent critter with a few (workable) downsides.

As far as I know LB isn't shield blockable since LB has been DFA in both its SvA form and its TM form. I do work shield, but I've never been able to block or effect LB with a shield.
That might be the real problem: "I think the most problem for some is by time you can effectivly dodge the LB, you are beyond the teaching."

How high do the Dragon Priestesses in Shard with tiny peccs teach? Might be an option. Or Adan'f Dancers? How about Blade Spiders? Germesh'din? Telga Moradu on Hara?
Also, I don't know about melee but after you've capped bristles for weapon you can move to Heirophants and learn bow there (hide/stalk/longbow are all trainable up there in relative safety, they're blind).
I'm just naming all the things I haven't hunted yet, I have no idea how many of these are past Bristles and teach well.

>Bluefalcon
Armor/parry is ~375, evasion just under 400, 51 Reflex. With stance evasion 100/parry 80 I still parry every so often. HE is 320ish, with COTC I go through them relatively quickly. Skinning ~340, with HoL and a skinning knife I get less than 1/20 fangs when arranged.

25 Charisma, 35 Wisdom, 40 Intel/Disc.

You're a mage! Silly mage.
These days I rarely get hit by the LB, but I do use seords for training bow and stealth only, which they do real well at my level. And yes, my bow lags way behind my HE, and seords don't teach me evasion.
~Dulcinia
I can't imagine what more it would take to qualify myself as a hunter when some fat redneck drinking six beers and holding a rifle in the woods gets to have a hunter title, but whatever. --Teeklin
