Perhaps it's just a misconception of mine, but it seems that most rangers (if they train a ranged weapon) train longbow or perhaps short bow. Is there a particular reason that not many users use composite bow? How much more powerful is it if I'm using basilisk arrows either way? If we need a comparison on items then how much different would you say a composite bow from the cruise ship (one with spidersilk cord) and a mistwood/bloodwood longbow is?

You're not imagining things. Now- I'm not a ranger-prime, but I do have a few rangers. One reason long and short bows are trained more than composite is that the first two bows are player-makable. At present, composite bows are available only in shops. Though some of them are down-right beautiful. Also, composite bows have a slightly longer RT than longbows.

I'm longbow prime, I like it because it's easier to snipe with a longbow and as Ryeka said they can be player made to be pretty incredible.

That said, I'm backtraining short and comp bow and I like comp bow a LOT. I picked up one of the ones from the last Shard fest and it is quite impressive.

15 ranks and I was killin rockies with it.

I guess my primary question about composite bow is this. Does the best appraising composite bow hit harder with the same arrows, as a bloodwood/mistwood capped longbow? If not, why?

Store bought composites rate higher than store bought longbows. However, since player made bows can be made that are stronger than composites, you see why more people use longbows. Back when I started playing, I'd heard that fletching was being worked on and that players would one day be able to make composites and I figured that since composites hit harder, it'd be the way to go.

Well, after years and years, fletching is no closer to being finished. I've pretty much stopped using bow and it's now my 4th highest weapon (used to be even with my sword). Though I considered it a serious weapon once, it's something I pull out of mothballs to play around with these days.

I do, however, have a nice collection of composite bows:

a copper-banded maple composite bow with a braided spidersilk bowstring.
Deep brown maple has been lightly oiled to a sheen that emphasizes the dense grain of the wood. Thin copper bands are wrapped securely around the composite bow from tip to tip, lightly reinforcing the weapon without compromising its flex or accuracy. Slender strands of spidersilk have been tightly braided to create an elegant yet durable bowstring.

a leather wrapped composite bow

a tamarisk plains bow with flowing strands of white owl feathers and agate beads at the tip

a black Gorbesh composite bow with tips fashioned in gold

a triple-laminate shedua reflex bow covered in ancient Elothean sigils atop a steel wire
Engraved near the riser: Bowmaster Renshear Shapan'geur, House of the Gilded Longleaf.

a gleaming lemonwood recurve bow with snowbeast fang tips
Engraved near the riser: Bowmaster Renshear Shapan'geur, House of the Gilded Longleaf.

a darkened composite bow etched with slender panthers
Small panthers are depicted stalking down the shaft of the bow. The tips are capped with steel which has been blackened to the same color as the dark wood.

There's a few nice looking composites sold at the horse clan.

Not so much a tagline as a cry for help.

While longbow primary, I thought this one from the Ranger end prize on Corik's Quest was too cool to pass up:

a hunter's recurve bow with the crest of the Ranger Guild carved along the upper riser.
Five circles, resembling a paw print have been carved into the lower riser. Etched into the upper riser are the words, "No Ranger Stands Alone". Soft leather padding has been cautiously applied to the underside of the risers, to lessen the noise of the string release.

Yeah, definitely the place to go for a nice-looking storebought one, or get this one from the Survival Shop:

an osage orange flat bow with a rough hemp grip.
The visage of a sinuous growling wolf has been carved into the front and back of the bow, its stretching form lending a feral air to the weapon. Its light orange color hides the hardness of the unique wood. Carved into the midwrap are the words "Olum sora aburod".

The phrase means "Death from Above" in Elven (does anybody know what the phrase "Urmiro arinur" on the chunenguti sold there means?). I also like the one sold in Blackthorn Canyon, an ash and teak composite bow with a bleached leather grip.

Faster than a speeding bullet and more powerful than a locomotive?

Actually, when I first started using longbow, all I knew about bows was that short bows were fast and weak, and composite bows were slow and strong. Most people seemed to be using a longbow, and Rangers started with two ranks of longbow, so I decided to go with the longbow as well. I am now quite satisfied with my decision.

Will work wonders for fletching arrows too...once you get to around 200 ranks each. Oh and like 300 mech...oh and like 400 skinning...

BAH!

Use a Nisha short bow and player made longbow but picked up comp, light and heavy cross recently - obviously store bought. I like the way crossbows hit. Neglected them and comp at first. They are a challenge at low strength and agility but hit very nicely even then. Now working with all 5. Daereth has always been melee prime. Trying to remember that bows are not the best at melee range. Glad he's a Dwarf with good stamina.

I have my longbow load down to 3 seconds, not sure what it is with a nisha short bow. I've never touched a comp with Rant, but my thief is comp-prime for his ranged skills. I decided to be different. Comp hits harder than a longbow, in my opinion, but I dont think the load time is worth it, from hiding. Personal opinion, at least.

Speaking of Nisha-- The shortbow from the ranger package in the end treasure of the quest is near-old capped ebony in balance, though only high-fair on suitability..

And has a nisha loadtime.
