Hi

Im debating with myself wether i should backtrain TM up to my other combat skills so i can use it hunting at level but that would take a while and i dont know if it would be worth it.

I have 4 weapons i use at level. 2 melee and 2 ranged. I dont know if TM would add much to my killing efficiency.

I'd like to hear about your experience with TM hunting at level. Does it really add something to your kill power or you just use it as an extra skill to train?

I'm asking both for creature hunting and PvP use :)

So.. whats your advice? And why?

And what are some good tactics to use it at level?

PS: Ok, i know this post sounds a bit sceptical and badly written but im tired and didnt sleep yet so cut me some slack (its 1pm where i live) :)

The TM spells rangers have access to don't do anything that a longbow doesn't do better. We can't TM snipe, we have to worry about mana, we don't have a TM equivalent to STW, it's freakin' tert skill, BMR!, etc. The one exception I can think of is that maybe, just maybe you can get the slip on someone if you don't want to be obvious about your intent to pwnz them (hide, prep spell, target, cast). But I figure by the time you get TM up to par where that's possible, Z will have released SLIPS for rangers so you can hide, slip longbow, load, aim, snipe, mock dead target.

Now if you feel the urge to be a TM slinging ranger-mage (hai Xelten!), go for it! I mean why not, that's what's fun about DR, you can make your character just about whatever you want (it's also pretty easy to slip in TM spells into regular combat routines for easy TDPS). However from a power-gamer standpoint, I don't think TM offers much to a Ranger when compared to Longbow (or even HX which is my personal preference).

While this may change a little bit as Ranger TM spells grow and become a bit quirkier, the take home message is the same: your guild already has a ranged weapon it is intensely focused on, you don't need magic to do your killing. However, for characters who wish to focus on this aspect of Rangeration, you can become as competent at magicocity as you wishitate.

For PvP I can see it working well. Aim/prep/target then snipe/cast.

Honestly I have no intention of backtraining TM for 2 reasons:
#1 I've been without it for about 10 years, never had a need for it, and that's 200 ranks I'd have to gain just to get close to catching up with my regular skills

#2 I chose the Ranger Guild, not the Mage Guild

Speaking of which, when is the mech change coming that removes our traditional mastery of bow-making?

It's not our mastery in making ranged weapons that gives us our mastery in using them, and as long as it's remembered that we are intensely focused on ranged combat I'll be happy. If you want stealth and melee roll up a thief, if you want stealth and ranged, roll up a ranger.

Ranged combat as a Ranger is only a Stereotype. Rangers recieve no "Bonus" to using a ranged weapon aside from See the Wind and Snipe. (that I'm aware of) Not all Rangers are "intensely focused on ranged combat."

Only reason my ranger trains stealth skills at all is because they filled a circle requirement. Sure I have skill in longbow, but it's atleast 30 ranks behind my primary weapon of heavy edge. (at circle 30 to put it into perspective)

Not all Rangers are Legolas or Cattie Brie. Some are Aragorn or Drizzdt. I've even seen one or two that were Gimli or Bruenor.

Briarwen is an Aragorn Archetype Ranger. Can use a bow, has some ability in stealth. Best with a Broadsword as a frontline Skirmisher and can survive out in the wilds.

Well, if you want to list them all may as well throw in reduced load time with stats, but we also have a spell like COTC which improves an edged weapon. Rangers may have ability to focus on a bow(as I do) but its certainly not necessary.

I'm honestly not trying to sound insulting when I say this, but that's a really dumb statement and not all true. Unless you're referring solely to backstab.

Honestly aside from maybe Thief and Barbarians, I've seen characters from all types of guilds training outside their comfort zone in extremes. Nothing like getting beat down by a melee Moon Mage when you're a barbarian.

Personally I don't like ranged combat. It reminds me too much of physical spell-slinging. I don't enjoy that play-style.

Sure as a ranger I have a lot of perks with a longbow if I choose to use one. But really I don't. I train it a bit, but my longbow skill is not near my primary weapon.

I use a shield and two-handed sword. I currently play my ranger more like a nature-friendly barbarian-thief with high magic skills.
