This has been beaten around the bush and back again...but it's just too much to take. I come back after a month vacation, only to want to give up on this game with these people and thier names...

Do we report names even though no one else would...and they are now in the higher ups of a guild? Case in Point:

Father Guito Sarducci -- You watch too much damn SNL.
Zedducus Zoreander -- You just learn about the SoT series?

In these cases do we report, or can we just slaughter them for being totally unoriginal? This game is making me sick, I think I'm going to go throw up now...

Could a GM say either "YES" or "NO" about this...I mean....it's just sick

Excuse me, but maybe if you changed your filter a bit? By that, I mean look at all the original names out there. I know, it is jarring to see such people walking as Zedd--I actually saw him today in Haven and was gonna ask if he had a Richard Rahl in the family
: P, but he ran by before I could. But really, there are far more original names out there than those not. Just when we see the unoriginal ones, they stand out.

So why don't you take some deep breaths, and then enjoy the game. BTW welcome back.

In answer to the original poster's question, yes, you can report for that type of name, but in this particular case "Father" is a 30+ title, so there's really no chance that the character would be made to reroll with a different name. Novices and very low circle characters have indeed been directed to re-choose their names in some cases.

As for consent? Afraid not. ;)

What the heck is original anyway...

I mean, the theme that DR was based on in medieval, so naturally medieval type names are acceptable.

Where do we get medieval names from? History books, fiction written at the time. So in a sense, even though it is encouraged to use medieval names, if we choose one, we aren't necessarily being original.

My idea of being original is a name either no one would notice came from a TV show, or out of a series of books (Dark Elf/War of the Spider Queen/SoT/Riftwars, etc.). It's really not that hard to come up with a name...it may take a little time, but that would be "original". If people do use a name out of a book, that just tells me something about the person, someone who wouldn't probably know how to RP.

Yeah, it'll never change, and I don't know how some of these people can get away with it for sooooo long to make even a 30th title.

An original name is one that you have not heard of before or have altered it in a way to make it original.

Legolas is not an original name. We shouldn't have to explain what is original and what is not, just use common sense.

Then we have the names such as: Berrybopper, or Kitnpurr that are should be acceptable by the CM, but are lame.

Would it be possible to make the CM more strict about certain names not allowed? That workable, by chance?

Tonight I saw this name--Systemofadown. Come on, I would take any attempt to make a medieval name, but that is too much. Hope they catch the fella and reroll him before he progresses too much.

Amen, Gheist.

This is the oldest and most petty complaint around Elanthia, in my opinion. First of all, just because you have a name that happened to appear in a book somewhere, doesn't mean you didn't think it up. Two minds can conceivably come up with the same combination of letters. It's a different story when you have the same first name and same last name.

Second of all, who cares if you took it from a book? I'd rather see famous names running around then a;lksjfalskdjfs's. Which I'm seeing more and more of. Not everyone is creative. Not everyone wants to just take any random name the horrible name generator scrambles together. Nor do they want something stupid.

How many of you got stuck with a dumb name you don't really like but are too high in level to consider changing it?

It still just dumfounds me how people get so insulted over something so trivial as someone using a name from their favorite book, as if the name is some sort of sacred relic and that using it means they are disrespecting a great piece of art or something.

It's just a name, get over it.

Exactly. We should judge people by their character, not by their names. I've met a number of people with (seemingly) original names who were utterly worthless. I've met a number of people with blatantly unoriginal names who were really great friends, RPers, etc. Come on, one of ancient Rome's greatest orators was named Chick Pea, after all.

I for one am not really bothered by names like that. If they aren't obscenely inappropriate (As if something could be obscenely appropriate) and not direct copies off their sources, I see no problems. I don't generally get annoyed of things like that. But, if I was, I'd be one hell of a hypocrite

Well, ponder that carefully now. To your CHARACTER, seeing a halfling named 'Frodo Baggins' would not be OOC. You might wonder if maybe he deals in satchels or sacks of some kind with his 'baggins' last name.

You as the PLAYER recognize it as being from the lord of the rings, and instantly see it as an OOC curse upon the realms. It probably violates copyrights too, like the halflings who call themselves hobbits.

It would be nicer to run into a Gandalf Greybeard (and more pleasant on the eyes) than seeing Swordblayyde Flaming'Daggerz on the street somewhere. I'd even respect the Gandalf name more since it has a more middle-age theme, and seems IC from my character point of view. Can anyone name a good novel that had a character with a redundant compound name like so many of the 'heroes' of today run around with?

Can't copyright a name. As long as the character did not act completely like Frodo from LOTR it would not be a violation.

Even if I would think of the hobbit from that series, like I think of Smegul when I see his name, my character would have no knowledge of that.

It's actually kind of funny when you get past being angry about it. I especially like the different versions of the LOTR characters:
Strider, Stryder, Streider, etc.

Some of my favorites:
You see Fufufu, a Dwarf.
You see Titius Wegiee, a Prydaen.

Here's a funny page with stupid DR names on them..yes it includes Guito.

This may be off-topic, but that's one of the cooler things i've read here, and it's true too when you think about it. I use myself as an example, I really have NO evil in me. But sometimes when properly angered, I can feel a fire burning within.

I wonder how long before the evil growing inside shows itself, or if ever it will.
