The sad thing is that 14 years ago is pretty fussy to me. So I'm wondering if anyone could share some memories of the spells from back in the day.

I am talking 'right out of the box' for Rangers, Moon Mages, and well I want to make sure I am remembering that Khri for Thieves was at most just an inkling in some GMs eye.

Thanks,
Shadow7988

And I totally forgot about that Perceive ability of Barbarians, Thieves, and Traders.

As far as Runestones being able to be used by NMUs I was way for it, but then after being reminded how they work [The magic needs to be harnessed and focused through them, the magic isn't internally stored I am somewhat against it. Unless someone can give me a Lorerific reason for it to work on NMUs].

Once again thanks.

Back in the day, rangers used to cast SOP on their enemies to make them easier to kill. And you couldn't skin rock trolls (duh, rock).

I'll never forget the thief meeting where they announced khri were being developed and their reliance on discipline. Mainly because I was playing a halfling thief with 7 discipline at the time. Also because there was a halfling there (Squirt?) who used to use the act command to ride around on a little red tricycle.

yup, that was squirt on the tricycle. Gonk was the Thief GM at the time khri was announced.
warrior mages had that nasty thing of only being able to cast from the same spellbook once, then you had to wait awhile before casting from the same book. And courage was an awesome spell. It would last forever.

When khri evasion was first put in, it was like the most awesome thing out there. It seriously rocked.

you couldn't backstab other PCs though. And undershard thugs backstabbed with broadswords. Which did serious damage to my 8th circle thief while looking around there for.. something which was found after dying a few times.

when NMUs could use runestones, there was a particular bug with askentine runes <the ones that have compost> if you had relatively low ranks in MD -- that instead of "poofing" things, you made other things. My thief composted some foraged herbs in some critter or other, and made a room full of short swords. That was fun.

Out of curiosity, did you make everyone stop trying to kill Lyras so you could go try to kill Book?

I remember being forced to take Fire Shard as my first spell in the War Mage guild. Also, joining the Ranger Guild and having my skills not given to me, but exp being dumped into my pools and learning my beginning ranks.

Oh yeah... this technically wasn't out-of-the-box, but shortly after the web migration, I remember taking my 1st circle Barbarian decked out on full plate and plopping him down in creepers in Therengia and just slicing every second. He was perfectly fine. Also remember hunting Blood Wolves at 5th circle.

Elemental sensitivity. That's actually why I was fed up with the WM guild and started playing a thief, only to have that khri change sprung on me :/

>And courage was an awesome spell. It would last forever.

Well, depending on how many people were in the group, yes. And lead... wow lead.

Dunno if anyone remember the first week of the web migration, but you got double the experience for that entire week. And since it happened right as my school year ended, I basically ate, drank, and slept by the computer.

Back then we didn't have fancy front ends. In fact, I played a lot on the AOL client which had zero features. You could type commands, that was it.

So to save my hands from carpal tunnel (which actually wasn't known at the time) I used my programmable keyboard. The thing was, the macros that I created were always active. I managed to name a folder 'skin rat' at some point, which was impossible to delete in windows 3.11 because of the space in the file name. Good times.

Game crashes were pretty fun in those days too, because everyone would go to the same chat room on AOL. (Dunno what it was like on the genie service.)

Oh, and just to george it up here for a second, I remember the day that shoplifting was released. A bunch of people (including some moon mages) were able to steal the 37? plat shimmer cloaks from Arthe Dale. I couldn't seem to steal anything, so it was a frustrating day.

The jails were filled though and for some reason you'd stay in much longer in those days. (Dunno why they let you out of jail so fast now, actually.)

Anyway, with about 30 of us in jail we all started speaking foreign languages for fun. (Yo tengo deiz kronars.) The RP expectations were MUCH lower back then.

and you used to be able to juggle in combat too.

yeah, i remember shoplifting being put in. we tried to get the long hooded cloak from arthe dale too. and there were a few things that weren't supposed to be in milgrims that a few of us managed to nab as well. They were buggy though, and rang a bell in gm-land.
the 2 things were bastard swords <this was before forging so we made a few plats selling 'em>, and siege arbelasts.

nishu grabbed a long hooded, i wasn't quite good enough to get those. the first thing i actually shoplifted was a pair of britches. :-)

we robbed that town blind. fun times.

>>So I'm wondering if anyone could share some memories of the spells from back in the day.

Well, when I started...
- Bards weren't released yet, so no enchantes.
- No held-mana spells.
- Groups frequently formed to help Clerics harness mana for Rejuvenation; Resurrection didn't exist.
- Moon Mages had three spells, in completely different spellbooks than they are now.
(Shadows - Shadow Manipulation book; Clear Vision - Physical Enhancements book; Calm - Mental Attacks book) Transduction didn't exist until Telekinetic Throw was released.

A little before my time...
- Warrior Mages could TARGET any spell, as there was no TM skill yet. When the skill was implemented and the requirement added, the Chamber of Forgetfulness made its first appearance since some WMs had no targetable spells. This was the point where Fire Shard was forced as each WMs 1st-level spell, since it was the only first tier TM spell.

I remember taking my then 33rd level barb into Scaly Seordmaor's 10 years ago and being able to dance with 2 of them. They were considerably easier then.

Most everybody mentioned things I remember so there's no point in repeating those. However, there's a few that weren't mentioned:

1.) The Hing

2.) The day Qi province opened. IIRC there was no connection from Haven to Ratha when it opened.

3.) The day Moon Mages became skilled enough to be able to gate between the islands.

Yeah, just the Seerah from Crossing to Ratha. And it had a rockin' buffet down in the lower decks. I remember the ice cream!

That ice cream is still down there. Go down into the bottom of the wreck of the Seerah and go through the hatch. Keep swimming down. You'll find it.

i remember ratha being released. those of us who attended simu98 got to go on the first boat there. <we got a piece of paper with a number at it at the con, and when we typed the number in-game it turned into a ring with the word "friendship" on it in whatever language our characters race was. <Naturally mine was in S'Kra, and Schvartz was the one that went > It took 6 hours to get there, and i was so stir-crazy or boat crazy, i became the first person arrested for pilfering once we hit ratha. <i managed to nab one of those crossbows in the chandery> Fun times. Oh, and going into the room with the cold metal altar <this was before they "changed" it.-- gave you a spirit hit if you touched it. This was before the sewers were fully implemented, so you couldn't get into the valves. Looking back, that was a GOOD thing. <naturally I headed for the sewers, I was out to try to be the first to find the Ratha thief guildhall. hehe> No, i didn't find it then. Took awhile, and a few more trips before I was sucessful in finding it, but someone else found it first>. And getting lost in the bazaar was fun too.

Oh the glory of flawlessly one-hitting rock trolls with flowers until one managed to close in to melee and one-hit me in return. I think I was circle 12 at the time.

I remember giving Timothy some georin grass and getting a cracked leather sheath inlaid with troll bone (LOOK description included something about it being bloodstained) that I could fit longbows (plural) in. I actually never found the bottom of it. It couldn't hold boxes, but I think it was about the same size as the backpacks of the time.

I remember all of the additional spells we had for multi-whatever. Fire Shard Volley, Zone of Protection (as was mentioned), Multiple Ethereal Shield, Mass Rejuvination, Strobe.

I also remember Ranger spells that you could ask Kalika about that never actually became live spells. Eagle Vision, for instance, was supposed to give you a glimpse of the area from the eyes of a passing bird (and reveal hidden people to you). Stalker's Canopy, which was supposed to make it so that Rangers could move while Blended.

You reach out with your senses and see dull streams (4/21) of golden Holy mana radiating through the area.
Letting your senses extend further, you feel there is pale mana (7/21) to the southeast, pale mana (7/21) to the east, and glowing mana (11/21) to the northeast.

Numbers.
