Massive plate from Dirge for me, I saved up for it too. After about a month I discovered we could dye things and I decided a dark purple with black accents would be cool so I dyed it plum. My friends started referring to me as the grape Paladin so that idea went kaput after a couple months.

I remember having what is now considered an old backpack. My friend told me of a new shop that had just opened up near crocs that sold bags and such. We both went up there and bought backpacks. I remember buying like a red snake-skin backpack. Then I realized that all my stuff in my current backpack didn't fit in my new one. Didn't matter though we both threw our old backpacks on the ground and walked back to crossing (me holding my spear that my old backpack would fit)

Almost forgot about this one

You pull up your black pantherskin basking in the power of the animal. You feel fearless.

The black pantherskin is pocketed.
The black pantherskin is fairly soft.
It appears that the black pantherskin can be draped over the shoulders.
You are certain that the black pantherskin weighs exactly 100 stones.
You are certain that the black pantherskin is worth exactly 541200 Dokoras.

You can't tell anything about a black pantherskin with onyx eyes.

The midnight black skull of the panther is darker than the black onyx spheres stuffed into its eyesockets. Dark leather ties allow the skin to be secured, and the skull is arranged so the former predator's teeth clench the shoulder of the wearer when worn.

You feel somewhat less fearless.

Late to this thread- but who in but this crowd could appreciate it?

The first item I was thrilled to get was when I saved up enough for an Arbalest from Theran!

But the first item I realized I had that was really special was my old beta backpack.

I had been playing awhile, and didn't realize that it was special until somehow I realized I could put pretty much anything in that backpack- length, width, number- didn't matter much- don't remember if I ever did fill it up.

I had been hunting fire maidens and such, and collected a whole bunch of boxes- probably 40 or 50 in my backpack- met up with a Ranger in Riverhaven, who kindly offered to open them up.

For the ease of his opening- I put the backpack on the ground- so he could just pull the boxes out of them. In the scroll, I missed him mentioning that he was going to cast compost. My fault not his.

Yep- my old backpack was Composted. I was depressed for several days about that.

I treasure my travellers pack, but it is but a shade of my old backpack. But I never put that pack down- ever.

An Elven Longsword. I think it must have been 1997, maybe '98. I was playing my first character (longest I've ever kept a single character, too.) An elven ranger. I had him all dressed up like Link. Green tunic, green hood, white leggings, medium shield ... I don't remember how I got that Elven Longsword (I'm pretty sure I didn't buy it myself) but it completed the whole thing.

That was back when I played armorless (and it actually worked!) Man, I was young ...

This sort of child-like, innocent excitement about dressing up our elf like a barbie doll is one of the elements of roleplaying as a kid that makes these kinds of environments, and the original AD&D fantasy world so able to create life memories with asterisks that represent particularly cool/magical experiences.

I wonder if the extent to which players care about their characters' has diminished over time as the novelty wore off, or did some always maintain that excitement. I'm really speaking to players who like to PvP and/or love watching the numbers go up. Because we all started with the same naiveté.

I still try to dress my characters differently than anyone else in the game.... takes a lot of effort to keep the lines small.

You are wearing a witch ball, a witch ball, a witch ball, a patchwork tunic with a boar eating a bar of soap brightly stitched on the front, a brown burlap cookie bag labeled "Kookies", some twill knee pants with several patches, some steel-toed footwraps, some frayed burlap shoes, an ironwood bootlegger's crate reinforced with steel bands, a hand-stitched traveler's pack, a platinum parry stick inlaid with bands of jade, a sturdy wood-toned shield sloppily painted with a red boar eating a bar of soap, a lightened chain balaclava and some etched steel gauntlets.

-
I think the took the frayed burlap shoes off a swamp troll in 1999.

One my male characters wears a bodice under all his clothes. Hiders hide it though, but still there. I didn't care about numbers nor circling til 3.0. Mostly got tired of not being a mid character, so I started training pretty hard. But my characters still are themed, and dress them up certain ways. I need to redo them a bit. After guild fest I probably have them reworked. Since I don't think I really dressed them up since last guild fest, so its time to reorganize their gear again.

I remember the first festival I didn't have anything to spend. The next festival, I think someone gave me a plat to spend, and I bought a hobby horse. I thought those were the cooliest things. Before that, I can't really remember. Oh, and those utility belts. I remember saving up for that.

It's not always naivete. One of my favorite characters ever was a Rakash Barbarian who literally owned nothing except a spear (and the strap so he could wear it, I suppose.) Naked. Rakash. Barbarian. I didn't care that I couldn't train half of the guild requirements (no armor!?) because the character was just so much fun to play. Circle 1 for life!

I've been playing Caraamon for ... 17? 18? 19? years straight now, and I can say without any hesitation I am more attached to him now than I was in the past.

This may be because he's my only character, or maybe because I'm insane. Either way, I'm happy.

I started Ndin around 1998-2002 range, I don't remember the exact year. I remember being so excited about the game even back then, that I got my dad (still plays regularly), and my brother playing (comes back for 3-6 months every 2-4 years), and tried to get my D&D friends to play when I was in 7th grade. Yeah, I'm one of those nerds. I still play semi-freestyle D&D adventures/storylines while at work with my boss that I've known 20 years.

For the first 10ish years, I enjoyed the game, the friendships, and all the stories out there, and rarely circled. I didn't care about ranks at all. I've had at least 40 characters throughout the years that never quite made it to level 30.

I'm still as enthusiastic about my main character, Ndin, to this day. My first go-to persona for any other RPG I play, I have Ndin in my mind.

The biggest thing I regret, is not having power-trained during the first decade, because I preferred to be well-rounded or slack off. I wish I could have hoarded at least some of all the cool things that have trended throughout the years. However, I'm just your average poor 106th circle warrior mage, who doesn't have but 2-3 special things in his possession and I'm perfectly fine with that. Not all of us are the top 1% of the top 1%, and helps give me goals to reach for.

Recently, my home life has been a bit more hectic, so I don't really get time to RP as often as I'd like. Lately, it's watching the numbers go up, but that still keeps the virgo half of my brain happy. So, I do still have the same excitement about my character (and have PvP'd in the past and would like to again some day), I just can't show it at this time due to RL constraints.

So the excitement lays dormant until RL allows the fun to return :D

I'm kind of with Ndin on this one. I go back and forth, but on the whole, I've actually steadily grown more into the RP side of the game as time went on. I started with that same kind of "Link" approach when I began too, then I went to chase numbers alone, then I came back to the middle and have found a lot of fun in trying to develop a character with more depth. I also semi-regularly retire from the RP stuff to chase numbers too though.

It seems to me like that people that I see burn out are the people that don't have any back and forth at all. They either chase numbers until they realize you don't "win" DR, then quit because the other side isn't fun for them, or they RP and decide to go because they don't want to chase numbers (or don't know how) and everyone else seems to be flying by them.

When I got myself out of the "Must be moving as much as possible to be happy" mindset, and changed to "If I gain at least .01 in any 1 skill, I've made logging in today worth it", my DR playing experience became much more enjoyable. I've seen so many people post this over the years, but never truly believed it until I finally changed my mindset and realized I was doing DR wrong for so many years.

There is a balance between enjoying yourself in RP, and grinding numbers that creep along. Sometimes we lean more towards one over the other depending on our Real World issues, and some people break themselves trying to stay to the extreme of either play style.

Once you learn to adapt, and throw some flexibility in your play styles, you'll never burn out. Of all the absences I've taken over the years, every single time was due to finances. Never due to boredom or anything else.

Also, most of the changes to DR in the past few years make it even easier to bounce between doing tons of different things during your play time, while still learning and progressing at the same time.

Think I'd have to go with my [56pt] bloodwood longbow that I got as a wedding gift -- back when they were valued at 250-300p apiece and only 2 or 3 PCs could make em..

Still have it and use it, though it's now altered with a dragon-y look:

>tap longb
You tap a gold-tipped bloodwood longbow that has been crafted to resemble a sinuous dragon that you are wearing.
>look longb
This deadly weapon is designed to resemble a white dragon with piercing golden eyes. Brilliant colors painted on its surface show a scorched arrow shaft barely visible in its left claw, while a ball of flame lingers in its open maw, behind rows upon rows of razor-sharp teeth.

Shimmering dragon scale greatcloak.
The first item I ever REALLY wanted, and I broke the bank by paying 50 plat for it. I had never(maybe still never) seen an item with so many verbs and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It started many years of cloak collecting.

The Original azure-scaled poloh'izh hide cloak.
This is the first item where I thought - Whoa this is the most useful item in the entire game by far. This is bad ass, a must have, this is a game changer. I guess I was right because Simu changed the game. I broke the bank again by paying 1000 plat which was quite a bit at the time. I later graverobbed another one off of Ragran and gave it away after he pestered me for two weeks with a macro that was basically.

cast/fire jhime
turn cloak

which eventually became things like

One of my characters still has a basket. Can't recall if it's dyed or if it was undyable. And I believe I also have at least one of those Elpalzi (sp?) claymore sheaths or whatever; the ones that hold longbows and just about everything else.

Was wondering if, even if just for posterity, someone who knows some of the answers would be willing to compile a list of GM names who were responsible for, say, the first spidersilk sack, or the moneybelt, or the elven longsword; those archival items upon which the game was originally popularized; the items that remind us of our own lives 10 to 20 years ago - like smells that brings us back to some past place or experience.

Would be sweet to know who gave me those memories. Lots of those items are listed in this thread for reference if someone were generous and intrepid enough (and had the institutional memory sufficient) to provide us the chance to textually direct our gratitude.
