What I'm figuring out from my 7ish years away from the game is that I'm lacking information both IC and OOC in order to Roleplay my character effectively.

Let me give you a great example.

Earlier yesterday I was sitting around listening to people talk about the symbols. They spoke about the Philosophers of the Knife, they talked about the Hounds of Rutilor (SP?) and all their guesses about the symbols and what not.

Later on that day I had my character go check out these symbols for himself. When he reached the symbol by the Academy there was a small group of people standing there discussing it.

Not wanting to let a chance to Role Play go to waste I slowly worked Mordiazi(my character) into the conversation.

Brilliant as I am, Mordiazi eventually brought up the Philosophers of the Knife. Thankfully (and he's the thank you), Terra whispered, "OOC!!! OOC!!!" (Not exactly what she said, she was far kinder)

So of course, I researched it afterward and it was OOC information put out by the GMs as background for the new guild. So thank you for that, Terra, for stopping me before I embarrassed myself and my character further.

What makes it worse is that one of the characters there turned out to be a GMPC which I didn't know of when I showed up but I figured out by people's reaction to him as they started showing up.

Of course, this all makes it tough for me to play my character.

Whose history is that of a scholar who taught at the Izma Ru'ef and whose reality (meaning after I created him) is that of a guy who held lectures on different historic events, spent a lot of time teaching his fellow Elves about the "True" histories not the ones written about in books. And who, when I left, was knee deep in Politics and was actually part of a Council that was given a town to "rule"(not the right town, but a town none the less) so to speak.

So my question is, so how do I play this guy now? Knowing his background, and the type of things he was into before I left. What should I do with him? I enjoy playing him, but my personal knowledge is lacking and that's reflected in my Role Play.

The only solution I have is to train with him, and stay away from everything involving heavy RP (he's way behind where a character who has been around since 1997 should be), while focusing on an alt for my heavy RP until I can catch up with everything and feel comfortable playing him again.

I don't know, what do you think?

I'm not sure precisely what you're asking - do you mean that you've been away for so long that you don't feel you're up to date on current events?

If that's the case I recommend either coming up with a reason for why your character doesn't know (and try to fix that ICly), or ask someone to update you OOCly on stuff your character would know but you don't.

As for the Philosophers thing, I've seen it a lot lately and knowing how the average play.net poster treats board/character separation it doesn't surprise me. It'd be really nice if GMs could mark their posts more clearly but even if they do I expect people will bring it in-game anyway.

I personally perceive the general gist of the necromancer hysteria, the Asemath scouring and the Hounds of Rutilor group as being information it would be reasonable for an informed character to know. The rest (including direct, open references to the Philosophers), not so much. I'm open to correction on this though.

I think its very fine to come in and ask what things are about. And especially to welcome other people with whom to roleplay.

What isn't fine is for someone to exhibit overt hostility to someone whom they've never met, tell them to "burn in a fire" or even worse, "burn in an oven" which is what happened to my bubbly little olvi bard when she went around exploring the new "graffiti" on the walls, in the hope of encountering at least a small bit of roleplay.

All in all, try to keep whats said on the boards seperate from how your character reacts to someone whom they've never met, or a new situation that you haven't encountered. Some things are now being brought into common knowledge. For instance, the idea of "the great work" has been named - and seen or perceived by bards - but - our characters don't know "exactly" what this "great work" might be. Only that there was some child of an older man whom they claimed was a necromancer -- killed in the area by those calling themselves the "hounds of rutilor" -- Whom we do know from historical record <in IC books> were a group of paladins and clerics.

We Might be able to find out more about this group through a conversation with Temple Priestess Tallis, who, being an Elf of some years, and also a follower of Rutilor, exactly what this was about. At least from the cleric perspective.

Why isn't this fine, if someone is roleplaying an unpleasant character that doesn't like bubbly and annoying bards? Nothing they said was remotely OOC.

Your character was irritating more than a few people in that group, incidentally. I declined to thump Basgonif, but that apparently didn't stop someone else from voicing their dislike.

Funnily enough I agree with the rest of your post.

she had whispered to me that she didn't like my posts on the boards nor on SC nor my other characters. which are all OOC reasons. That's what makes it OOC.

i don't do logs. too complicated when you use wizard and you have 3 characters windows open at the same time and are paying attention to all 3. Maybe I should start keeping some.

It's hardly complicated with Wizard. I ran Wizard for many years with several accounts and had logs running on all of them.

That's pretty much what I'm asking, Caelumia.

I know how to Roleplay and what the difference is between IC/OOC information(pokes Gonif), but there's just so much stuff out there right now that is OOC info that "I" don't know is OOC info. And when I get into a situation like yesterday, it can be embarrassing.

I just have to change him a little bit and I'll take your advice and try to find someone to catch me up on things that he would probably be aware of even if he did take a break for 30 to 40 Elanthian years.

I totally understand where you're coming now and with these events lately with all the information floating around I have to stop and ask myself now and then "Does Cael know that yet?" because I forget.

Anyway despite our little run-in (heh) you're welcome to chat with Cael in-game about anything, or drop me a line at ReverendReene on AIM and I can try to get you caught up.

I feel this is the right way to go. I agree with what Caelumia is saying and I'd like to add a few things as well.

If you character was gone for 30 or 40 Elanthian years, where was he? Did he seek solace in the woods in some remote area? It would explain why he suddenly has a certain detachment to the current world, and it would certainly make him feel out of touch. A slight version or Rip Van Winkle comes to mind here. Maybe there's a circumstance as to why he was gone so long? Did he intentionally disappear or did he go on a hike, trip and bump his head, and then wander the woods thinking he a wood nymph all this time?

Regardless, I hope you don't feel your lack of current knowledge as a negative aspect, but rather a perfect opportunity for your character to arc. A new sense of purpose and a strong desire to absorb all that he can might thrust him into a new quest for knowledge.

I also think this opportunity could lend itself for you to tell your tale of what exactly happened some 40 years ago. Sometimes change can make your story that much more interesting.

On a more personal note, I think it's awesome that you came here to ask for help and to admit when you might have goofed up. I also applaud Terra for helping you out in that moment, albeit being embarrassing as heck. I think we can all speak from experience and say "Been there, done that!"

On this note, please don't do the "I was in a coma for 40 years!" bit. There are so many more original and interesting ways to go with such an absence.

Perhaps you were studying underwater basket-weaving with the 'Togs out in Knife Clan for the time you were gone.

After all they're 'Togs, not the most nimble of mind or body...it could take that long.
