This is true.

But there isn't a problem in representation here; there's a problem in interpretation.

<<There was some MUD I was playing that would automatically add periods to the end of your sentence and caps the first letter of your sentence(I think it was HV). If we had something like that in DR, might be worthwhile.>>

We had it briefly, but it caused some problems with quests that required you to say something specific and the system wasn't set up to ignore punctuation so it was removed.

It'll be back though. Much sooner rather than later.

You can add me to the list of people who don't understand why people complained about it, too.

Something you might add... convert / and , at the end of a say into punctuation. I probably end up with a / instead of a ? or a , instead of . at least once a week, and my character's not even talkative.

Also, it would be nice if '{<charactername> worked the same as '}<charactername>.

It may not be the update of the century, but it would be convinient and score DR some points for style. Laziness FTW!

Here's my vote for the removal of extra ???'s and !!!'s at the end of a sentence as well please. Removing extra ...'s beyond a third would be nice as well, but not too necessary since they're not that common.

<memories of punctuation lessons>

An ellipsis is comprised of three periods (or full stops for you British folk). An ellipsis can be used at the end of a sentence in two ways: to indicate a continuation of a thought, in which case a standard ellipsis will do (typically when followed by an ellipsis at the beginning of the next statement), or to indicate a thought trailing off, in which case the ellipsis is followed by a period.

</punctuation mems>

In short, "...." is sometimes appropriate at the end of a phrase. Generally, though, I agree with your idea of a cutoff on strings of periods, because when I see "..........." it makes me sadface just a little.

Depending on my mood at the time I'm always either irritated or amused by the following:

XXXXX says, "..."

Also good is this one:

XXXXX says, "?"

Or for those who live on the edge:

XXXXX says, "...?"

I'm even more amused by the thought of having grammar/punctuation ninjas pop out and assassinate those who do it. Too bad that's not supported by mechanics.

That'd be a bit much. Missing your punctuation isn't the end of the world, it's simply a useful indicator for how much skill and effort a potential roleplayer is putting into the act.

I was actually talking about the people who use ONLY punctuation in their say. I miss punctuation all the time when I'm in a hurry, but you'll never see 'Vashir says, "..."' or anything like that.

THAT warrants a ninja.

I'm one of the '... ers, and I use gawk and puzzle often enough. The ... feels more appropriate sometimes, like where you just start making a noise but it never quite goes anywhere. Kind of like uhh.. but I don't want to sit there going 'uuhhh..

Anyway I'm weird and nobody should do the things I do. But I will make sure to do them more around Vash.

I forget the syntax, but there is a verb out there that gives the message that you're about to say something but stop yourself.

Also:
ACT starts to say something, but trails off before so much as one word is formed.
ACT looks like he wants to say something, but is too dumbfounded to manage it.
ACT etc...

My friend and I were talking about this earlier, and we came to the conclusion that a "mouth" verb would be amazing. Like

>mouth }person Is he crazy?

>person1 turns to person2 and mouths "Is he crazy?"

Maybe with a perception check, I dunno. It was a fun thought.

This. Having two periods at the end of all my sentences would seriously outweigh the benefit of putting one on the end of all the others.

>like where you just start making a noise but it never quite goes anywhere.

Mm, glottal stop. The closest thing we have in English is a hyphen or an apostrophe in certain words. Since the international symbol for it won't work here, you could try some onomatopoeia instead. "Keh?" "Gwuh?" "Hn..." or possibly "Nrr..."

I get the feeling that the GMs are aware of this and will put a check in to make sure it doesn't add a period if there's punctuation there already.

It didn't add extra periods. It only punctuated for you if your sentence lacked punctuation altogether.
