Here's my idea.. granted, it'd probably have it's own verb, or be named something else:
>observe (some word that means foragables)
You scan the area and see that you would be able to forage: [Insert list of things you can find in this area.]
[Possible Roundtime.]
Based on the skill at which you CAN find, that is. Such as, you cannot forage ebony limbs, so it wouldn't show up on the list.
I've seen this used in another game, and it's great, in my opinion. Would definately make foraging easier in foreign areas, and such. Or maybe just a neat new Ranger ability.

Already on the table, under the "scout" verb. Here's how I understand it's supposed to work.
A Ranger does it and sees stuff he can forage here. Cool.
A non-Ranger does it and sees that the area is a certain type of area (marsh, desert, forest, whatever). He remembers the book in the library (or tacked to the wall next to his computer, more likely) that said which herbs are usually forageable in each environment.
