I just wanted to say thanks to all who whispered to me during the meeting and such. A lot of folks that I hadn't seen in a very long time all whispered "good to have ya backs" last night.
I also wanna thank the GM's that showed up and Eyoni for making the meeting a success. I left there with a better understanding of the changes and how they'll effect our Guild... and a better understanding of the GM's view on where our Guild is heading.
Lastly, I expect to be gone as much over the next year as I was the last. I was only around enough to manage two circles during the past year and I've already been told I'm deploying again Aug/Sep and part of Oct. And then after the holidays is over I'll be gone again from Jan to Mar. But no matter how much time I spend away from here I'll always come back to the game when I can. I've seen people quit before that was too busy to keep up with their peers... but frankly I think that's down right stupid. Thanks again to everyone.

I don't know who all was responsible for the shop stealing system (I'm assuming someone involved with thieves)... but having not stolen anything from a shop in a very long time (back when I actually played a thief character) I am really enjoying the way stealing from shops has changed now so one can steal the low-end items from shops even as a non-thief with low ranks!
Stealing was always one of the things I loved about my thief character... now I can incorporate that into my current character without having to "practice" stealing on friends.
I realize it's been out for a little while, but today was the first time I've actually got up the nerve to try it. This is great. Thanks to all involved!

<<Z rocks:)
I remember, when I was a thief, feeling very hard done by when it came to GM love. I remember hunting the same creature for like 20 circles, because as soon as I would progress to move on, a new change was implemented to set me back (and I didn't really train all that slow combat-wise) or the critter forward... it was always overall lore that kept me from advancing. Also, about the time I was able to make master lockpicks pretty frequently... they nerfed it so I was making something like "quality lockpicks". It was tough back then. :)
I'm glad to see them getting all kinds of cool stuff lately. I'm actually kinda scared of thieves now. They're sort of a mystery to me now with all their new ambush <ability> things... I like it. They were sorely in need of some attention IMO.
The things that I've been seeing implemented seem to be more than I ever could have dreamed for when I was a thief. (Throwing dirt in peoples faces and insta hiding? Sweet!) :)

Currently, I am a bit irritated with my thief.
It seems like things in Crossings are scaled oddly; 0-20 ranks is learnable with ease, but once you get 20 ranks, you have to search high, low, in the middle, sideways, and backwards, to find things that you can actually grab, but also still teach. Once you breach 30-40-50 ranks it seems to stop, but 20-30 ranks is a bit of a dead-zone right now, it seems. I had 50+ ranks once the new stealing went in, and have 20-25 now, so I'll comment as I gain ranks.

Yep, they're moving me the best, but I had wanted to do shoplifting instead. What can I say, I'm greedy. Give me something good and I want more.
I suppose I should mention that I love being able to actually shoplift at 0 ranks now. It's just odd that there are 2 or 3 items you can double lift at 0-10-20 ranks, but 20-30-40 seems to be a dead zone for shoplifting.

It may be true that 20-40 is light for shoplifting, I didn't try to go around every shop in the game checking every item (it would take forever). If there's a true dearth in the newbie type towns we can look at having something added.

Due to the way the system determines difficulty, not every city is going to be able to support every range in the skill. This is usually easy to get around by either stealing from NPC's as Z suggested or moving to another town to work the skill. The latter method isn't the best option for young characters obviously, but it is still viable.

I'm not trying to ask that every city have an easy, predictable, progression from 0 to infinity. My current experience is largely based in crossings, but I had some difficulty in Haven as well.
Basically, once you cap the easy items, water, envelopes, mixing sticks, there seems to be a gap where everything, is either too hard to steal, or doesn't teach. I can't test the bard shop right now, as the true bard has good eyes now. I'd be happy to post in-depth per-shop marks, etc. if you want Z; I just don't want to clutter the boards with my junk unless someone cares to read it.
Perhaps a minor award for attempted, but backed off and/or caught? I don't think it would help low-rank thieves much though, so don't think it's a very good solution.
I mean, I managed to get my stealing up to 50 before the new shoplifting mechanics, so I know how to learn stealing without using shops. I'm just discussing what I see as a shortfall in the system.

Mmm....im kinda concerned about the 450+ stealing arena. I'm hearing it gets scarce. How about..if we could pick pocket the shop keepers themselves?
That would instantly give use a large amount of steal-able NPC's in the city.

This was tested with my war mage. Has a bit more that 20 stealing, but not a whole lot, and pretty good stats. No bonuses obviously, but hopefully some of this will translate to your effective stealing ranks. I'm not sure which of these shops are urban or neutral, so you may have different results. Might be worth a shot. Deleted my previous list.

Hrm well right now with 390 right now i can mind lock but i hit three towns (leth, xing, haven) however the xing potion does not lock me. I tend to first lock half way through leth. I suspect through in the next 20-30 ranks the majority of my xing/haven stealables will stop teaching:(

20-30 didn't seem like a gap to me, this is a rough list i've been throwing together when I think of it..... The ranks are around when I started stealing the item.
I bet you could fill your secondary pool grabbing 2 each of:
Hair bow, taffelberries, sage, mixing stick(might be capped, if so candle mold), hose, leather gloves, pick(caps at 26, then there is a lull in this store until 30 for the rag).
I forget when I started grabbing daggers, you may be able to snag one of those.
My list:
STITCHERY(didn't find out about this shop until 48 ranks, you could likely start earlier):
48
beret is easy
I believe a hair bow is your lowest option here.
GEMSHOP:
31
hairpin
GENERAL STORE:
0-10
Charcoal
bundling rope
Envelope
10-20
Dried Meat
Taffelberries
Coin Purse (capped 26)
28? i think it was
herb pouch Still going with 66 ranks
hip pouch even odds at 31
33
flint
CLERIC SHOP:
0-10
Lavender
10-20
Sage cap around 45
sirese flowers
Chamomile
Small-brown feather
small-grey plume feather
incense
30+
*chalice
ALCHEMIST:
0-10
water
10-20
mixing stick
20+
small jar cap 31
candle mold cap 26
*grain alcohol capped 47 I think
pestle 47-
44:
large jar
COBBLER:
0-10
socks
10-25
hose
boothose
31
*anklets
25-35
silk stockings
tights
39
sandals (very iffy at 39)
ARMORY:
0-10
gloves
10
leather gloves still going at 66
MUSIC SHOP:
0-26
pick 26 capped
30
rag Very very iffy at 29
LOCKPICK SHOP: These might start higher now, since that change that made really light items harder.
10-20
ordinary lockpick
20+
stout lockpick
slim lockpick
HABERDASHERY:
30
hood
bowtie(slightly harder than hood)
