With less than 80 in mechanical lore is it worth the money and time to attempt to carve my own lockpicks? I know they wouldn't be anywhere near sellable...but it would be nice to actually make one.

As I am sure you know, LockPick making is not soley dependent on Mech. It all depends on your Lockpicking skill, Agility, reflex, Wounds, Burden, etc...
I would say to you, Yes, carve away. They are not going to be anywhere close to masters, but there is a sense of pride picking with your own picks. Just be aware, they could "out" you unintentionally. I.e. carving with a crude lockpick.

The more mech lore the less likely of breaking or bending picks while carving. It also will allow you to use tougher materials. Lockpicking is dominant in determining the quality of the pick. The softest keyblanks are pretty expensive compared to the others so I'd suggest maybe carving a few just to get the satisfaction of carving your own then wait awhile until you can use the cheaper blanks.

With the lockpick carving re-write, things may be harder or easier. I'm assuming carving will be harder. All common knowledge such as you need X amount of lockpicking with Y amount of mechlore to carve Z type of lockpick would need to be re-researched. So best bet is to keep on training hard.

Welp.. with just under 140 in Lockpick and just over 100 in Mech.. i can get quality ivory and copper.. and i think bronze too.
Havent tried in a while or have any idea how to see if my bonus rep is good or not.. but in the long run.. i dont really pay much attention to it.
If i can carve masters one day.. great.. if not.. i'll keep buying my friend a dozen or two blanks and getting her to carve me up a bunch every month or two free of charge.

keyblanks are free to us as long as you are not too greedy and ask for too many in one go or in too short a timeframe ;)
I had a go at making one out of ivory, locks 130, mech 101 and I got a common which lasted me for a while. Not sure what the best I could carve is, but that is good enough for the boxes I pick at level.

With patience, You'd get Masters, especially with Khris up. I get Quality with about 20 less ranks in each once in a while without Ks, fairly often with Ks
