Mysteriously, I don't seem to find the trader shop topic. So, since shops pertain to the economy, here are my questions.

Are foresters bows still available in the shops? Are there plans for the return of the gem seller on duty buttons? What about the nifty folding chairs? Can we open a trader shop in Aesry? And what is the crest of the Aesry trader guild? Perhaps a trader defending her treasure-laden ship from pirates.

And finally, is the trader team participating at all in the development of the marketplace in Mer'Kesh?

I like the idea of some of those items returning, but perhaps with a twist? Let the Crossing shop have some of them, the one in Muspari have some of the others. The badges, folding chair and others weren't there very long compared to the batch before with forester bows and crossbows and such. Would be nice to see some of the old and semi-old items resurface every now and then.

What about having these items rotate between all the Trader shops? Then, people really wouldn't know when they change <g> Not that it really matters.

One problem I seem to have is that a lot of people really don't like paying anything "extra" for those shop items, and feel they are being cheated. Thing is, we get them for a discount, so they would normally be more anyway...sigh...I really don't know how to educate people about that.

I have the same problem with Traders selling gem pouches. People feel they're entitled to the extra cash that Traders get -- they're not. When I sell my gems to a Trader (yes, sell) it's for what the appraiser would give me. Possibly rounded for ease of numbers. One transaction, done. I don't see why so many Traders are willing to give away their hard earned money based on the hope of a tip.

Its not really their hard earned money. Its my hard earned money that they, in a way, collect interest off. In the end it was still my gems, and i will most certainly tip a large % of the increase, but it was still mine.

I wouldn't finance a trader who just took my gems, sold them with very little work for all his profit and I saw nothing of it. Would just be a leech then. I'd sell by hand.

Hogwash. You 'earned' whatever the amount of coin that the appraiser will give you in exchange for the gems. The Trader, through skill and training, has earned any amount above that amount which the Trader is able to garner from the gem shop owner. Is that to say that you should see none of the increase? No, you have provided the gems which make the transaction possible. However, to demand 100% of the increase is patently unreasonable. It is likewise unreasonable to expect that the trader will give you 100% of the increase and then hope for a 'tip' in return. Partners do not work for tips.

The answer is simple, you appraise your pouch first, and then ask the Trader how much they will give you for it (allowing the trader to appraise the pouch with the shop owner). If the trader offers you 1 single copper more than your appraisal, you are ahead (plus you have the convenience of a quick transaction). If you think you can do better either on your own or with another trader, then do so.

It's neither, and it's both; a partnership.

The gems are the hunters, the extra money is made by the trader.

If the trader did not sell the gems, no extra money would be made.

It would not work without either one of these components.

To be technical, the extra money would, in the most basic form be, the property of the Trader, because if the Trader did not sell, the extra money would not have been made.
ex: hunter's sold value - Trader's sold value = extra money made by Trader

Both the hunter and the Trader benefit. I'm glad to hear you tip Traders.. I've ran across some who don't.

>>Would just be a leech then. I'd sell by hand.

The Trader is providing a service, so you won't have to sell each gem by hand. I see receiving more as an added incentive (some traders don't even get more than the hunter!)

If a Trader did not get extra for the gems, would you still use their service?

All this talk about who's entitled to what money and such can be pretty confusing, so I thought I'd write up a (half-facetious, half-serious) Gemshop Bill of Rights.

Apu's Gemshop Bill of Rights:

1. The Trader has the right to charge any amount of money for selling the customer's pouch (including zero)

2. The Trader has the right to charge this fee without informing the customer (known as skimming) - as long as the Trader does not actually sell the gems without making sure the customer is satisfied with the price being offered.

3. The Customer has the right to turn down a Trader's offer for their gem pouch - the customer then has the right to decide to sell the gems himself, or find another Trader to sell them, or throw them away, or whatever.

4. The Customer has the right to be dissatisfied with their dealings with a particular Trader, and to avoid doing business with that Trader in the future.

5.a. Apu has the right to scroll the hell out of everyone in the room in an attempt to optimize his gem pouches and learn an extra .0001% trading skill.
5.b. Everyone has the right to squelch Apu's annoying scroll and/or thump him for being annoying.

6. All your gems are belong to Apu.

So there you go, now you know who is entitled to what. It actually turns out that the 'extra money' that a Trader might earn the Customer isn't 'entitled' to anyone in particular. In fact, the Customer is entitled to demand that the Trader pay him any amount he wants for his gems; the Trader is entitled to offer the Customer any amount he wants to give for the gems; and both parties are entitled to cancel the transaction at any time if they don't like the demands of the other party.

And if that is too confusing, please refer to #6 on the Bill of Rights, and turn over your gems to Apu, he's too busy chasing circles to worry about charging little fees or worrying about who should've been entitled to all that extra money from his bonus. Well, that and I make more in tips offered freely than I'd ever make from charging fees or skimming.

Both trader shops do get rotated from time to time, and items pulled will reappear again eventually.

I've been a bit too busy lately to rotate the shops (You should see why in May) but I plan to do it in the near future.

If he did not get them it depends on the location. If it was crossing I would use their service once and not again. If its another island I don't mind. But i just tip 30-50% of the extra i get, so low sellers just don't get anything.

And I was comparing it to say, real estate. You hire someone to appraise, adjust the price, usually higher than what people would do themselves. Then the company takes a % of the whole cost. Since its 1 gem pouch its really just 1 amount not 2. I saw it that way, and is how i reason it is still the hunters cash,

Those are pretty nice points, and I agree with them right up until #4 <g> After that it seems that Apu slipped into dementia and lost focus.

Personally if everyone abided by those guidelines, I think a lot more gem pouches would be sold and both customer and Trader would be happy. Can we maybe get a plaque put up in the gem shops with this? <g>

I liked it! I should print it out for future reference (especially the squelching scroll part).

Where the 'Official Badges of the Traders Guild" in the shop? If so could we get them back? I'm 40th circle now and have never seen em for sale.
Also a few more items that are useful in the shop would be nice. Like boxes that spew random gifts, gem pouches with different designs (Gem Pouch Design Contest!), flower-themed items, NICE thigh worn quivers, verbed items, nice weapons (not just pretty! the ilteshes are still a huge hit), good light chain, leather gloves and masks, and belt-worn greatsword scabbards.

The black gauntlets brushed with platnium from one of the Bard merchants are a huge sucess. Even at 12-15 plat a pair the vanished off the tables. People like pretty, expensive-looking and suseful items. Or verbed 'cute" fluff.
People bought up the corsets even the 100-180 plat ones. Why ? Because they were CUTE. The verbes were great and they were in a range of colors so that most people could find one they liked.
None of the items we buy from our shop are verby and 'cute".
Pretty weapons are nice, but they have to be useful too. Revamped Foresters Bow and Forester's Crossbows would be nice also. Maybe a new color or two?

Oh! tackle boxes! People would love fishing themed items such as 'tackle boxes, fishing-themed belts, wearable fishing baskets, REALLY spiffy poles, exotic lures and bait, abd of course fish themed items ( a basket lid with a flat-eyed creppo painted on it, a apron embroidered with you kill it, I'll grill it!, a water opal bracelet clasped with a pearl unicorn bream)

We traders also need a "consumable" good that people like. I've no idea what this would be, any suggestions?

Small badges bearing the crest of the Trader Guild were in the Trader Shop temporarily, about the same time of the onyx-inlaid broadswords.
