Just wondering how we should start training to increase our ability to prevent or detect theft.
IF I understand it correctly perception will soon be the primary anti-theft skill. IF I understand the threads stealing is used for determing how successfully you steal, and will not be used as an anti-stealing factor.
Is this correct?

Not in all the defense technicals, no. The big one you seem to have missed is that when stealing > perception then the defense side of the calculation becomes perception + stealing ranks above perception:
Example 1
stealing = 42
perception = 85
defense = 85 (stealing doesn't count)
Example 2
stealing = 42
perception = 20
defense = 42 (stealing counts, but only the last 22 ranks of it)
At least, that's how Zeyurn came across to me when he was explaining it.
