fireball is not hitting my intended target, but something else in melee.

You (adeptly balanced) are facing a supple firecat (1) at melee range.
A red-gold scaled atik'et (1: nimbly balanced) is flanking you at melee range.
A supple firecat (1: slightly off balance) is facing you at melee range.
A muscular firecat (2: solidly balanced) is behind you at melee range.

>tar fb
You trace a curving sigil in the air, shaping the pattern of the Fire Ball spell.
You begin to weave mana lines into a target pattern around a supple firecat.

You gesture at a supple firecat.
A tiny ball of flame flies at a supple firecat!
The fireball contracts and gains speed as it nears a red-gold scaled atik'et!
The fireball whooshes past it, scorching the skin of its neck.
The scaled atik'et is lightly stunned!
A volley of fiery shards explode outward toward a supple firecat!
The fire shard hits a supple firecat in the throat, causing it to gag slightly.
The complementary nature of the spell empowers you.
Roundtime: 1 sec.

You gesture at a supple firecat.
Your spotted leopard seems to make your Fire Ball spell less straining.
A tiny ball of flame flies at a supple firecat!
The fireball contracts and gains speed as it nears a supple firecat!
The fireball blasts into its abdomen, nearly tearing it in half!
A volley of fiery shards explode outward toward a muscular firecat!
The shard hits a muscular firecat squarely in the abdomen, sending it reeling and scorching the skin.
The complementary nature of the spell empowers you.
The supple firecat falls to the ground and lies still.

Well, it was always hitting what you had targetted, though because of some changes to the magic core it was doing it a bit strangely. The messaging should be more in line with what you expect, also the exploding part of the hit messaging should always be on the target rather than having the target of the spell sometimes be hit by the stray shards.

Something has either changed or is wrong with Fireball... I've been hunting with friends for months now casting fireballs like a crazed pyro. Never once has a stray shard or ball of fire hit them, until today. If they were in the room with me, all of them were hit.. I was at melee with 4 wyverns, I targeted one of the wyverns I was at melee with, I cast it and 1 wyvern was hit and so were my three hunting buddies. I did this several times having them completely out of combat and in hiding.. it would hit them while in hiding but never brought them out.

Ok, FB should be a bit more friendly to group hunting.

Did this fix affect something else? I'm not learning as well from my casts of fireball as I was a couple of days ago.

I would not be surprised if that was finally fixed. Fireball was locking TM in under 5 minutes.

These are with 4 drakes at melee. For the resuscitant cast, it may have been only 3. Notice that I had to will it to explode on that cast, which is odd since they're much lower than my TM skill. All of these casts are at 100 mana with full target.

Fireball now:
You gesture at a lava drake.
You contribute your harnessed streams to increase the pattern's potential.
A massive ball of flame flies at a lava drake!
The fire glances off a lava drake's stony hide as it passes. A lava drake's skin blisters as the intense heat of the fireball washes over it!

The messaging fix may have had minor exp changes, since in some cases the spell may have been hitting multiple targets at the full strength part, rather than only hitting your intended target with the full strength part. In all, the changes have about as much likelihood to cause an increase in exp as it does a decrease. FB probably does deserve a bit more tweaking because of its weird position of being a hybrid single target/area spell.

That was just a miss. It happens.

Yes, I understand that. I don't think I should be missing resuscitants with a fully targeted fireball. They haven't taught me TM for quite a while.

Going back over my post, it seems that the main fireball was hitting everything and the shard volley was only hitting one target. This was tested right before I made that post.

I just went hunting, and it seems to be working correctly again. I guess it got fixed, or resolved itself. Or maybe it was an engagement issue. They were all at melee, but I've noticed that it happens sometimes. I'll be at melee with 4 things but the fireball will only hit 1 of them. Usually, entering 'face next' a few times, or retreating and letting them re-advance, fixes the problem.

Thanks for checking it out.

There's a flat chance to miss anything and anyone, these days. (Equivalent I think to the flat chance to hit anything)

I can't say I've noticed any change in my learning from Fireball.. it still locks rather quickly for me, maybe 7-10 minutes? Thats with 4 juv wyverns at melee.

I'm still having issues with the fire shard volleys. Sometimes the main fireball will hit all 4 targets, and there won't be any fire shard volleys at all. And others it works as intended, with the main target getting hit by the fireball and the volleys hitting the other 3. I can fix this issue by retreating to missile and facing first, second, third, fourth <critter>, and then letting them get back to melee.

No volleys: I had entered a room that had 4 drakes in it, let them advance and then cast fireball when they were all at melee.

That's actually working as intended. When you cast the spell at a target, the area mechanics start sorting out which other targets to hit. Any targets that are hit before the intended target get a 'whoosh' single strike. The intended target gets a whoosh or a exploding hit. And any targets that remain after the main target is hit get hit with shrapnel.

Oh, that makes sense. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll do some testing and find the easiest way to make sure I get shards on the extra mobs.

Here is the solution I came up with.

put ret
put ret
put face first %1
wait
put face second %1
put face third %1
put face fourth %1
wait
put face first %1
put face second %1
put face first %1

I run that script and let them advance to melee again. Works every time. I can probably shorten it a little, maybe do 4th, 3rd, 1st, 2nd, then let them advance. I'll check that out later.
