Is this a permanent choice or can you ALIGN to different elements whenever you want?
In-game help and epedia are not clear on this.

You can -- and should -- change your alignment as your spellcasting habits change. You must drain charge down to zero to change alignment, however.

You can align to a different element whenever you want, the only requirement is that you have no elemental charge built up so SUMMON IMPEDANCE until you get there. With skill, I believe you can do it with a tiny amount of charge.
Once able to change your oppositional alignment, you can change that freely as well with the same restrictions.
