To Circle, or Not to Circle on 06/25/2007 06:21 PM CDT

I'm at a point in my training where I really feel like I've got all the spells I need, at least for a while. In fact, when I made 33 (where I am currently) I didn't even pick a spell. Now, I'm thinking down the line, I might be wanting more spell slots than I currently have, and so I've come up with an idea:

I'm thinking about continuing to gain skills needed to circle, but then, not circling. I want to be able to buy some spell slots - a lot of them actually. I was thinking between 5 and 10. I heard that the lower circle you are, the cheaper they are, so that's the motivation to not circle. I know it will be painstaking, but could it be worth it in the long run?

How many TDPs might I be looking at, as a 33rd circle, to gain 1 spell slot in Throne City? Two, three? Also, I have a friend that's 79th that's wondering how many he might need.

Not exactly. The price is based on your Primary Magic skill; so if you want to accumulate TDPs without increasing the price, stop using magic.

Oh, haha! That makes it incredibly less likely I'll do this. Still, with 210 PM, do you have any clue what I would expect to spend on even 1 or 2 slots?

Price for a spell slot is 200 + 100*slots purchased + (PM-100)/2.

There is no reason not to circle, honestly. It nets you TDPs and an increase in concentration and a few other circle-based calcs.

If you don't like the spell choices, don't take any. It's a good policy, honestly.

!!!!!!!!!!!!

What!?
Why!?

My suggestion would be: No, it's not worth it at all. Not even one of them.

TDPs are precious precious little gems and that would be more or less be throwing them away.

We aren't moon mages. We can get all our spells just by circling. In fact you will have extra slots eventually. However, those are pointless too for now since I believe there is only one spell scroll we can perma learn? GO GO AIR BUBBLE

You don't need slots to temp learn things like sorcery.

I can't imagine why you would need one. Especially not 5 or 10.

That's me though. Maybe the others think different?

Buying spell slots would be a HUGE MISTAKE.

Seriously, there is absolutely no reason. I have open spell slots that I haven't even filled because so many of our spells are really pretty pointless and overlapping in their function. And even if you think all of our spells are amazing, it really doesn't take all that long to get them.

You will get all the spells in time, but you will never able to get back those lost TDPs.

I don't think empaths should ever buy a spell slot since they get all of their spells by 50th. For other guilds, it really depends on how much time you have to play. If I were starting a warrior mage in prime right now I would probably buy 2 or 3 spell slots.

I don't know offhand what circle you need to be to get all the current WM spells, but you have something like 40 spells, so it has to be close to 100th circle to get them all. That's pretty much impossible for 99% of DR players.

Buying two spell slots when you're low level costs what, 500ish TDPs? That's like two or three points in a stat for me, not something I would even notice.

Sure, if you are absolutely certain that you will play to over 100th circle and you have the patience of a monk there is absolutely no reason to buy a spell slot. If that isn't the case, however, you might want to consider it.

I bought a spell slot at 30ish so I could pick up my first defensive spell after realizing that I was taking exactly zero advantage of our defensive benefits. Now, a scant 20 some odd circles later, I have 2 free spell slots (mainly because I'm more interested in what will be than what is), but still don't regret buying a spell slot around that time. Having SW was great for giving that much-needed defensive boost, and I'm glad I had it then.

That said, if you already have the right spells to keep you alive and kicking, I don't see that buying a spell slot is especially worth it. With the speed of circling in the 30s and 40s range getting ready to increase a bit in the near future (from the XP absorption between 100 and 200 increasing), there's no reason to pick up a spell slot, in my opinion.

As was mentioned, there's no real reason not to circle. Your circle doesn't matter for spell slot cost if you do decide to do that, and it gives you 133+ tdps on top of any others you might earn. Plus, it increases your concentration if you're a gwether or follow moonies along in the Ways. Just a good thing all around.

True, but like I posted over in MMs, the first spell slot is enough to take a stat from 10 to 15. At that level, that's a HUGE increase. The same TDPs will get you one or two points in a stat around 40, which isn't a big deal, but by then you've got most of the spell slots you need.

That would be one of the worst mistakes you could make as a Warrior Mage. Right after choosing Ball Lightning.

There's nothing wrong at all with circling. The only time it's bad is if you chase your circles and neglect important skills.

Well the reason I was not wanting to circle is because I thought the TDP cost of gaining spell slots was based on circle, not PM. Knowing now it's off of PM, there's no way I can hold to it.
