Hi there! I've just returned from a sufficient leave and am having a great time once again. I would love to hunt some of the newer areas such as forfedhdar but I have been away so long I have no idea where to start. Swamp Trolls don't even teach TM for me anymore. I'll be backtraining defenses with them for a bit but after that I need a great TM working spot for my level. I would love something around the par of black leucros that would drop boxes, gems and coins. Here are some of my skills...

This is what kept me from giving a suggestion.
With that TM/weapons I was fighting vykathi soldiers, but those defenses wouldn't work for that area.

Thanks everyone, I guess I'm a bit too liberal with SUF and SW and quick TM kills. Multiple leucros still whoop me but can only get me muddled in TM. I guess I should have seen it coming. I'll just stick with swamp trolls for defenses for a while. They pay well enough and work evasion, armor & MO quite well. I <3 backtraining!

If you're willing to spend a bit of effort it is relatively simple to avoid burning all or even most of your mana buffing up. Experiment. Harnessing large amounts of mana at once is inefficient; try harnessing smaller amounts. It may take slightly longer but the tradeoff in less attunement spent is probably worth it.

While you bactraining might want to pick up two additional things. Real armor. Unles you plan on being a very stealthy Warmage leather is painful for WM hunting up close and personal.
LC is good or just plain out HP. And Shield. Can wear a small shield on your arm now days
once you get 50 ranks in it. I sugeest a small Crock shield they are made by players. Set shield at 1 100 evasion and whats left in parry.

You can use a small shield on your arm at zero ranks. 50 ranks is something to do with crossbows and bows. Loading, I believe.

At the very least you should be wearing chain. With YS your hinderance on a set of mixed LC/HC (which is no worse than straight LC) is going to be barely higher than leather, if at all, and your stealth hinderance will be similarly low.
Remarkably, though, good tanned leathers with YS perform similarly to good forged chain or plate because the chain and plate don't receive quite the same bonus to absorption that leather does. The difference in protection from accessories, however, and the lack of advantages for leather vs chain with YS make leather a poorer choice overall.

Armor's a bit... interesting, economically speaking. You generally don't lose armor under normal circumstances, so a steep 300 plat price isn't that bad when you consider that you're probably never going to have to buy another one. There's minimal costs associated with armor upkeep, and forged/tanned armor is cheap to repair.
Re: What to hunt for a 44th... on 11/06/2007 05:52 PM CST
What do you guys think about armor when only considering store bought armor?
I'm in plat, so forged armor is very rare (essentially none that I can buy).
When "training" I tend to use LC/HC/HP combo which I am able to lock 95% of the time. I tend to use a "parry" stance in which I parry ~90% attacks of the time, and evade 9.9% of the rest. My armor set leaves me "fairly" hindered (note, even with this hinderance, if I switch to stance evasion I can dodge the vast majority of attacks, which is helpful when using my bow against charging critters).
However, during invasions/quests I switch to leather. In this setup I evade probably 99% of attacks. I can be either unhindered or insignificantly hindered depending on what I wear, which is the goal because I will use my bow as much as my mace or offensive magic.
As far as I can tell I have all the above armors down to minimum hinderance (haven't seen a change in overall hinderance for like...20 circles...?).
I can't really think of a better system. I don't want to switch to HP because I lose out on TDPs plus I have to start relying on more buff spells (YS) that I don't currently need. I don't want to switch to leather because it the extra protection from chain is helpful for long-term training.
I've considered switching to chain shirt and LP greaves instead of my shard medium chain, but I am worried it may add too much to my overall hinderance (I have 157 ranks in LP if I ever do switch, I'm just not sure its worth it).
Am I missing something? I can't really see a better possible combination.

I did the plat trial thing, and was able to find some really good armor from the players. Go with smaller pieces that are easier to cap. I got a tanned crimson merrow reinforced coat for 4 gold ish (capped) and near capped LC gloves/greaves and a true HC helm from Haven. Darn good set up and very similar to what I use in prime. It seems it was harder to find good plate, but several folks there can make good chain accessories and don't even know it.

This is going to be hypocritical, because my WM doesn't have YS yet. I circle slowly and there's another path I'm trying to take right now. On the flip side, I only wear LC. That being said, if you have equal or higher skill in your other armors over leather, I'd get YS and roll with your normal setup. I suspect that the reduction in hindrance plus the boost in protection would make it worthwhile. I'm sure someone can correct me if my suspicion is wrong.

Thanks again for the tips everyone. I have LC helm and gloves at this point but my LC ranks are horrible. I am so out of the loop it's not even funny hehe. I'll pick up the shield. Habit keeps me from using the empty hand when we can now cast with both hands full. What would you sugguest I buy?
Re: What to hunt for a 44th... on 11/10/2007 11:09 AM CST
Personally, I prefer a shield that I can wear on my arm. I believe for war mages it would be one of the small ones- but I could be mistaken. That way I won't drop it or forget to grab it after I skin something.

That is correct, a WM can only arm-wear a small shield.
Despite its ugliness, I would tend to recommend the Jester shield from the Trader shop, since it is one of the readily available small shields with the best construction.
Also, a player-tanned small croc-hide shield is supposed to be pretty good, although its construction is less than the Jester.

<<My guess is that the spell is balance such that the increased protection value from casting AeG on a spell is roughly equivalent to the shield bonus from creating your own shield.
Not from my testing. With 60 mana I can create a shield that is the same as a 60 mana cast on a tower shield from Theren. I did not have them weighed, but the difference between the two was indistinguishable. This also compares with the creation of an arm worn shield that is equivalent with a capped croc buckler. If you intend on using this spell I would suggest creating a shield so you get the boost.

So I just bought a croc-skin shield. it's medium in size and app says it can be worn on left arm. I can't wear it there yet. shield is awfully behind though... 26 ranks. The small croc shield I appraised at the bazaar showed only shoulder worn. Am I missing something or do I really need 50 ranks before I can wear this shield? Thanks :D
Re: What to hunt for a 44th... on 11/10/2007 06:58 PM CST
Ahh when I wrote my earlier reply I didn't see this post. So essentially I have a useless shield here. Awesome! I saw the buckler but it apped shoulder worn. I'm assuming you can adjust the straps on the buckler just as this shield I have now can. I love hind-sight. can I trade it for some fore? sigh
Re: What to hunt for a 44th... on 11/10/2007 07:10 PM CST
Go to the trader you purchased it from and nicely ask to swap it out. If they don't accept a trade or refund... warn them, and then if they don't comply I suggest killing them.

I wouldn't suggest mixing leather, chain, and plate.
I woudl suggest some mixture of chain and plate. I just switched my armor up a bit and am learning 4 armors nicely in red leucros.
Head/Eyes/Neck: HC helm from Haven
Arms/Torso: Chain Tunic from WM guild shop (g/g all around)
Legs: LP greaves from Haven
hands: HP gauntlets from Haven

Unless you can stay in super swarmy areas, 4 armors gets tedious. At least it did for me. My plates weren't locking, they were never getting above muddled. I remedied this by going HP head/hands, LC shirt, HC greaves. I keep them all locked now. My thinking was - they'll move faster if they hit higher mind states, so I probably won't be missing out on too many TDPs because I'll be ranking quicker.

I think what you are saying is true.
When I fought in fendryads it was tough to lock three. However luckily red leucros are busier so I can keep all four locked. So it is somewhat situational for sure.
In general I though try to stick to "busy" areas, as I like keeping my MO up as well. It seems to work out that armor will lock up in pretty much any situation I learn MO.

I have no problem keeping all 7 armors + shield locked following that rule. If I can lock MO, I can lock all armors and pretty much keep them all that way the whole time Im in combat thereafter.
