The recent announcement that the multishot spells were to be downtweaked got my mind going. I feel that a comprehensive approach to TM needs to address workability around TM, experience gain and Mana.
All too often the argument surround workability of TM spells is done within the vacuum, in my opinion. I remember back when upper level mages were concerned about the available mana in most of the upper level hunting areas. (I currently hunt in an area that has Dimly at the very best, which means I rely on GZ for my primary TM learning spell because of the damage to mana ratio) The general answer is ?take it up with the GM that owns the area?. The problem that I see with this is that TM and its experience gain is tied directly to Mana, it is not possible to discuss the playability of TM if you do not address its available power source. Its like saying that you fixed the engine to a car and it runs great but if you want gas, we can?t help you?the result is the same? The car doesn?t run.
My second concern, the proposed fix to the TM learning and effectiveness is to work on the second tier spells. These spells tend to take more mana and it appears that there is a thought that casting with a higher prep will teach better. Due to the way TM teaches (like a weapon), it appears to me, that if you can only cast 2-3 spells due to the available mana, it decreases the possibility of learning TM. (There is always the argument that the mage move to the correct area, though as discussed, most higher hunting areas are limited in elemental mana). This is similar to attempting to train ranged with one piece of ammunition it is not playable.
The paired problem with TM, that I feel is significant, is that due to the power of TM one loses out on experience gain when using the TM spell to its fullest. Meaning, If I could move from clear to Muddled using a Melee weapon in one gen to death situation (due to the number of swings involved) the same gen to death situation with TM teaching would move from clear to Thoughtful. (I?ll return to the lab and see if I can get exact numbers). It appears that TM teaches for the successful attack upon a critter in your experience range and that is multiplied by the number of times that you can successful strike said critter. There doesn?t appear to be any benefit to killing a critter quickly as there?s not benefit to dealing massive damage (above the cap for learning per roll). This results in having to kill more critters per rank of TM than vs weapons.
What does this appear to mean to me? It seems to me that when the new learning available under the revised spells will still not teach adequately when paired with available mana and experience calculation issues. It seems that we WM?s will continue to use the first tier spells for learning because they don?t kill the critter out right and will spawn a whole different but equally unfulfilling type of ?plinkers? (remember target <<critter>> right eye?)
Maybe this is currently a result of my current hunting situation, but from what I hear is that it will only get worse from here on.
My currently suggestion would be to treat knockout kills with similar code as Traders use with Gem pouches. (or used to) Meaning, If I one-shot kill a critter in my experience range, I should get a full block of experience based on that kill. If I exceed Mind Locked due to that kill, then my excess experience drops into a ?holding? (of a limited size) area until my mind pulses out and then will be refilled with what was pushed into the ?holding? area. I believe that this situation was thought up due to available supply of pouches vs experience drain. Similiarly, with the mana and experience calculation our TM is limited unduly and a way to learn from our offensive prowess should be considered. I think that this would encourage WM to use their magic to the fullest and is in line with the way we would hunt ?as offensive killers? and not ?plinkers?.
In all, I?m happy and I trust the GM?s. I just would ask that a holistic view of TM could be addressed and not the narrow view of only tweaking spells. I just don?t feel that the playability of TM as Warrior mages main weapon (and it IS supposed to be our main weapon when you look at our requirements) is being best served right now.
Maybe I?m missing something.
Thanks for listening,
Xand

hmmm...ok so this doesn't help me but a quick test, learning appears to be the same. But still Mana is still appears to be a anchor to TM learning, but always has (shrug).

I like the post but if we get such a cache to store our targetting skill then there should be one similar for the other guilds.
Only target for us, but what would it be for Barbs, Bards, Paladins and clerics. (Moon mages, too)
Althoug this would address the master of <insert OMG you're too powerful skill here> Primary weapon for Barbs? Highest armor type for Palies? (If the game can recognize the switch of highest skill it should be able to do that much also)
Harness for Clerics
Power Perceive for Moon Mages?
Empathy for Paths
Highest musical lore for the Bards
Trading for traders (They already have it I gather?)
I'm not terribly familiar with Rangers... Tracking?
Thieves... Hiding?
I do agree that the max number of bits a critter is worth should go immediately into our targetting pool if we one shot, however, should we allow for milking by letting a critter recover it's vitality then casting again? (Not a practice I undertake but I know that some areas have poor spawn rates and tormenting the critter for skill would make sense)
Jerevth
I can't fire them. I hired these guys for three days a week and they just started showing up every day. That was four years ago
