Just wondering what people see as the best armor for a war mage is. I've often heard a common path was to work toward light plate. I look forward to hearing all your responses.

Actually, very few people actually seem to like LP because it combines plate hindrance with paper fragility- or at least, that's one way to put it.
But I've known mages in all armor types. I knew one who was quite successful in HP. More often, the armor of choice is LC, with a smattering of HC and leather (for the sneaky ones). Keep in mind that there are new armor types now, and armor itself is being looked at again.
How do you see your character?

I will once again interject my armor set up, because I love it and highly recommend it to any Warrior Mage.
HP helm (head/eyes)
LP aventail (neck)
LP gauntlets (hands)
LC shirt (chest/back/abdomen)
HC greaves (legs)
You just get a mixing penalty for chain and plate, so the base hinderance is pretty reasonable. At 20th you get YS, which will pretty much make the hinderance completely negligible.
If you aren't comfortable starting with four types, go HC greaves and gloves, LC everything else.
I started in leathers, got 50 ranks, then switched to LC/HC/HP around 10th circle. At I think 15th I took up LP too. Now I wear all forged gear, and my LP and HP are both at 91 ranks. Everything moves great. I love this setup. As far as the armor requirements for the guild go, I could circle to 45 with just my lower plates, so that means that if I felt like it, I could make the jump to just heavy plate if I felt like it.
I also recommend training shield, although, as Ucu will point out, you don't HAVE to if you don't want to. :P

Ryeka et al,
I started out wearing leather, and now primarily sport light chain. I currently have 82 ranks in light chain and 32 ranks in light plate, as I wear a plate helm and plate gauntlets. Been wondering whether a move to bone is worth it or just stay course and train up light plate and eventualy buy myself a forged set. Ultimately I see myself wearing something with a bit more protection than light chain. Or is heavy chain perhaps another option?

Well- I, too, started out in leather. I got to about 120 or so in that before I got tired of stuns, and started using LC and plate accessories. Magdar helped me find a nice HP helm and LP gauntlets. By the time I switched altogether to metal, I had 157 leather. I now have 157 in LC, 122 in LP, and 130 in HP. It does hinder my stealth terribly, but that's the only problem I personally have.
Meanwhile, I have a couple of baby chars in HC. And I do like the way it performs.
Right now, I hesitate to say absolutely one armor kind or another because it's slated for yet another reworking. So I will say go with what armor fits your character, but don't neglect the others in case you see something you like better.

Re: Armor of Choice on 07/12/2007 03:35 PM CDT
My WM is played in Plat, so I chose HP; there are no active armor makers, so forged LC (drools) is out of the question. My intention is to wear the least hindering tolerable protection HP I can find, and use YS to offset it when I want. I don't want to be 100% dependent on YS to hunt, so I don't plan to tank up in the massive stuff. And no forged HP either.
If you're in prime, I recommend LC, because it can be forged with outrageously good stats for the weight and hinderance. Stack YS on there and you should have no hinderance.

>>There is no question that HP is the best armor for a warrior mage.
So buy more plate armor.... specifically mine ;)
It's really personal style and play. A person who likes to be more stealthy would probably go with leather or chain, while a person who wants to be heavy combat with straight forward melee would go plate.
A person who rather be a jack-of-all-trades or tdp trainer would go with a full multi-armor setup. Either way that you look at it YS a WM's best friend when it comes to armor and hinderance.
Play around and make a decision that best suits your style of combat. Remember, DR is not set, so you can always change armors down the road.

A WM can be very stealthy in HP actually.
Definitely train a bunch of types, whichever you're interested in and can pair to your liking.
When it comes to battle though..
>>There is no question that HP is the best armor for a warrior mage.
Ells do you have a site by chance with what you sell, or do I need to find all your stuff IG? I'm curious about your best protecting half plate regardless of weight.

That's mine, but I never thought of trying to make something as best as possible regardless of weight since there is a very very small market for that. I know Field plate at 750 can get up to h/gr/m protection. I assume half plates could as well somewhere around the same weight.

850 for me Ells with half-plate. You may be able to get there lighter. Personally, I don't think the extra tick up is worth the weight.

I've been playing around with armors in Polos for a little while now, while I loved light chain I kept getting frustrated with it. I depart alot.. so of course grave damage comes into effect. On Hara it isn't that easy to stop and get repaired either.
So I decided to start training HP
(LC 521 HP 329)
I've died like 95% less in HP vs LC and have not yet needed to get my armor repaired, even with the -200 rank gapping. And its been a good 4 weeks since I switched over, plenty of time to make a good solid comparison even with the differential in ranks.
I'm definately with Trop on this one - HP is by far the most worth it

Hmm good to hear I have been attempting to drag my HP up and was half thinking of abandoning the idea. Made the mistake early on and went with LC/LP to realize that LP sux good forged LC has better stats than LP go figgure.
Light Chain: 224 82% learning Light Plate: 208 28% learning
Heavy Plate: 138 50% clear
Altho I will have to add another piece of HP to make it move better. Still loath to trust to it all the way however.
On a side note LP periferals such as greaves or helms have decent stats the forged stuff. Body forged stuff for LP sux. But HP is nice hoping to be able to do body HP and periferals LP down the road and phase out LC out.

And yes there are appearently two predominant types of WM. The stealthy kind and the meele battle mages kind.
HP seems to work really well for the meele type. I must say I had to ditch my hidding however. After the latest series of changes to stealth can not hide on a blind and deaf old man let alone anything with eyes wearing HP/LP/LC even with YS on. Too bad had my hidding up to 152.

Yeah that's what I ended up doing. Started noting that I couldn't hide on anything after those last stealth changes while in heavy plate armor. I really enjoyed using the stealth with my long bow, ah well. I'm still pondering what I want to change, I also was using a large shield as well, might change it to a small shield to wear on the arm and go to a heavy crossbow. Havent decided really, sort of still have the warrior mage in moth balls for the time being.
