Warrior mages, I'd like to pick your brains a bit if you do not mind.

I am creating a warrior mage alt to mix things up a bit. He'll be wearing LC and HP until 100 or so ranks in both, and he learns YS. Then he'll switch entirely to HP. All forged, no store-bought crap.

He'll roll with an arm-worn shield almost entirely, and melee weapons will be HE/2HE.

I've little interest in stealth(In fact, I actively dislike it), but the whole point in acquiring a base in LC is incase I change my mind later in his career.

The question is, would you all feel it would be necessary for me to train this character with a ranged weapon? I'm very familiar with the pros and con's of each option, but I personally feel TM will be more than adequate as a ranged attack option - especially since it is primary instead of secondary. I'm coming from the perspective of a moon mage however, so I'd love to hear if it's any different over here.

Look at it from the perspective of heavy CvC or GMPC combat, and a desire to be adequate in those particular fields.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not into CvC or most GMPC-hunting. But I do have a war mage. IMHO, it's a good idea to train a ranged weapon in case you have to pick something off in an area with poor- if any- mana.

Agreed as a war mage you can dispense with ranged weapon if you dont feel like it. Advice:

I'd recommend Heavy Thrown anyway really good and not exactly same as bows and crossbows.

I'd recommend a Blunt. There are slice resistant things out there a good number of them so having a blunt to go along with your edged would be fine. Also traiing 4 weapons is good for a war mage so you have your defences keep pace as a lot of WM let their defences lag and end up having to pay the price of some heavy backtraining down the road.

I'd recommend Light Plate to go along with your HP. One other felow had similar toughts as you a while back. Why LP. Well a forged capped set up of HP/LP of HP helm and Half Plate with LP Greaves and Gauntlets gives you High/High, High/Great, Moderate/Great and two Moderate/High across all your body parts as protection against slice, impact and puncture. That is AWSOME protection. Mixing LP and HP has NO additional hinderance penalty as they are of same armor family. And learning armor is a PASSIVE EXP thing so having two armors instead of one move at max speed is pretty much a free gimi for TDP and al you got to do is wear it no other work required.

Here is what the appraisals of said armor pcs look like.

The gauntlets are light plate.

The gauntlets look like they offer protection for the following areas:

right hand
left hand

You feel certain that some gauntlets appear to impose light maneuvering hindrance and offers:
high protection and high damage absorption for puncture attacks.
high protection and high damage absorption for slice attacks.
moderate protection and high damage absorption for impact attacks.
good protection and good damage absorption for fire attacks.
moderate protection and good damage absorption for cold attacks.
poor protection and good damage absorption for electrical attacks.

If you were only maneuvering in some gauntlets you would be unhindered.
But considering all the armor and shields you are wearing or carrying, you are currently lightly hindered.

You are certain that the gauntlets are moderately strong, and are in pristine condition.

The gauntlets are made with metal.
You estimate that the gauntlets weighs around 55 stones.
You are certain that the gauntlets are worth exactly 135 dokoras.

The plate greaves are light plate.

The greaves look like they offer protection for the following areas:

right leg
left leg

You feel certain that some plate greaves appear to impose insignificant maneuvering hindrance and offers:
high protection and high damage absorption for puncture attacks.
high protection and high damage absorption for slice attacks.
moderate protection and high damage absorption for impact attacks.
good protection and good damage absorption for fire attacks.
moderate protection and good damage absorption for cold attacks.
poor protection and good damage absorption for electrical attacks.

If you were only maneuvering in some plate greaves you would be unhindered.
But considering all the armor and shields you are wearing or carrying, you are currently lightly hindered.

You are certain that the plate greaves are very strong, and are in pristine condition.

The plate greaves are made with metal.
You wonder if the plate greaves might weigh a few hundred stones.
You are certain that the plate greaves are worth exactly 162 dokoras.

The half plate is heavy plate.

The plate looks like it offers protection for the following areas:

right arm
left arm
chest
abdomen
back

You feel certain that some half plate appears to impose moderate maneuvering hindrance and offers:
high protection and great damage absorption for puncture attacks.
high protection and great damage absorption for slice attacks.
moderate protection and great damage absorption for impact attacks.
good protection and high damage absorption for fire attacks.
moderate protection and high damage absorption for cold attacks.
poor protection and high damage absorption for electrical attacks.

If you were only maneuvering in some half plate you would be lightly hindered.
But considering all the armor and shields you are wearing or carrying, you are currently lightly hindered.

You are certain that the half plate is fairly sturdy, and is practically in mint condition.

The half plate is made with metal.
You estimate that the half plate weighs about 380 stones.
You are certain that the half plate is worth exactly 2706 dokoras.

The great helm is heavy plate.

The helm looks like it offers protection for the following areas:

head
neck
right eye
left eye

You feel certain that a great helm appears to impose light maneuvering hindrance and offers:
high protection and high damage absorption for puncture attacks.
high protection and high damage absorption for slice attacks.
moderate protection and high damage absorption for impact attacks.
good protection and good damage absorption for fire attacks.
moderate protection and good damage absorption for cold attacks.
poor protection and good damage absorption for electrical attacks.

If you were only maneuvering in a great helm you would be unhindered.
But considering all the armor and shields you are wearing or carrying, you are currently lightly hindered.

You are certain that the great helm is moderately strong, and is in pristine condition.

The great helm is made with metal.
You are certain that the great helm weighs around 120 stones.
You are certain that the great helm is worth exactly 451 dokoras.

Kryeus,

Two things.

1. Shoot me an IM if you still have it lying around and want some odds and ends advice.

2. Sell me your armor.

Thanks
