Fun times so far...
- Lost half my life in a single hit twice now (down to 32 health from 64... yikes!)
- Spent most of my silver on herbs from my first couple of hunts... did the math and realized this was a losing approach. Spent some time foraging basic herbs (acantha, ambrominas, basal moss, etc.)
- Got a water moccasin bounty. Wandered into their area to see what kind of challenge they would be. Discovered they can hit me while I am in full defensive... wandered out of their area...
- Sold two gems worth over 1200 silver! JACKPOT! No idea what gem it was but obviously one of very high quality!
- Farming level 2 Thyril over roltons, snakes, gnarps, and rats... I have learned that skins don't pay a living wage at this level (at least not in Ta'Vaalor). At least the thyril have gems (see JACKPOT line above) and occasional boxes (which have mostly broken even at the locksmith so far).
- Finally starting to get ahead financially (over 5k in the bank!) I spent a large sum on a 1x axe (upgrading from my 0x broadsword) and am eyeballing a mithril tower shield or some 1x doubles for my next purchase... decided to save a bit more coin in case a healing disaster strikes before making another large investment in gear though!
So far having a great time!

Due to the level of First Aid & Survival low-level characters are likely to have, skinning is not a real big money maker.
Anything that carries SOMEthing, is a much better way to get ahead than something only skinnable.
I fell back on the REALLY old school: I started selling leather armor, short swords, and flails, from the things I'd killed.
And yes, like you, I was wild about finding some smoky topazes or green garnets or star sapphires as a real bonanza. :)

My current challenge (at least mentally) is that I want to put this character into VOLN. The issue being that you need to be able to get your weapons blessed at least until VOLN rank 2 where you can start blessing your own (0x) weapon.
I seem to recall that in the Landing you could get a bless for your weapon from the flower girls (somewhow)... is there anything similar you can do in Ta'Vaalor?
Alternatively I'm thinking I may be able to collect enough scrolls with bless on them over time (this seem like a long shot though)... I am training in 1x AS though in order to benefit from any scrolls that I do find.
And lastly... I feel like pure potions might offer a weapon bless as well... I need to check out the cost of the potions and how many swings I can get for each potion to see if this would be practical or not.
I hit level 5 this morning (Huzzah!) but I'm thinking about simply slaughtering a hundered thyril or so in order to afford some +10 gear.

There's a bless imbed on sale in the cleric shop. (rough grey crystal 10k base price, not sure how it works out in swings per silver compared to the flower girl)

This question inspired me to go searching for the answer. I knew the Flower Girl was involved, but that was all I could remember.
Our wiki was a bust. Is this considered some super in-game secret?!
But Google knew where to find all the details for the complete answer, and I added it for a Tip to the TownCrier for the next 6 days:
