You pour all of your red vial of dye into your red vial of dye, and then discards the empty container.
measure my dye
The dye has a couple of doses left.

Is there a maximum # of pours in a dye now? Asking because I have bought numerous dyes at various merchants and might be able to combine them for inventory management purposes.

Hope I'm not being pesky and it's something small/simple. I poured some cobbling dye from the warehouse to make it usable in the Ribbonator and by the time I had enough pours in the vial for the Ribbonator to utilize, it told me the dye was "too elaborate" for it. But it was just as standard basic color from the warehouse: scarlet dye.
I know some custom dyes (and I'm sure non-custom) are too elaborate for it probably because of the length/amount of characters of the dye, but "scarlet" should seem to fit, so maybe there's another reason it's not working.
