One issue I see is that the gemshop offers full loresong value, for both gems and jewelry. The pawnshop has always been a discount store, which I suppose fits with what we'd expect a pawnshop to be. The pawnshop offers to buy things that the gemshop will buy, but will not buy alchemy items or skins (I think). Some possible suggestions:
-Gemshop Only-
Following this reasoning, one of the possible fixes would then be to disallow pawnshop buying of these items. However, this would require the gemshop to buy all jewelry, even the ones past the maximum, and offer some limit like the pawnshop does. It's not a bad idea, just not a simple fix. Most gemshops don't have backroom tables, and it might be better to address this first. It would, however, spread out potential "good stuff" into separate places in town. And it would eliminate the pricing difference. But the weapon shop doesn't buy and offer used weapons, and the armor shop doesn't offer used armor. But it might work.
-Reduce Gemshop Price-
Or, let them continue to be sold at both shops, but have the gemshop offer a much-reduced price for jewelry, comparable to the pawnshop. This would be a big nerf (~1/3 the price for all jewelry moving forward) so there would naturally be screeching, mayhem, threats, guilt, etc. And hopefully regular gems wouldn't be affected. I also think it would put the value of these items out of proportion with other commodities like skins. I don't think this is a reasonable solution.
-Raise Pawnshop Price, or Pawnshop Only-
Raising the pawnshop price for jewelry to match the gemshop might also be an option. It would need some kind of special flag on the item that the pawnshop would have to see to know when it is jewelry, potentially both for pricing in the front and back rooms. And I'm not sure the same consideration should be given for regular gems. But, this would also make the pawnshop more convenient to sell things at (aside from the issue of needing a hand free for the note). No longer will people need to pinball from the gemshop to the pawnshop for a price check. The gemshop could even decline to buy jewelry, if there was a case for it.
-The Pawnshop Problem-
The 3 suggestions above only deal with the price difference for jewelry below a certain value. People sell weapons, armor, equipment that isn't jewelry to the pawnshop all the time that is worth quite a bit more on the player market. And better jewelry, that might loresing for 100k but a player might pay a couple million for. Even with the other problem fixed, this is still reason enough for someone with enough time on their hands to camp out. And the only solutions I can see here are to once again obscure the properties of the items, which will result in many of them being lost, or to somehow raise the backroom price so they are closer to what players might pay. Or, to make the pawnshop less relevant by making more player shops, or creating a game-wide auction house. None of these really sound easy to do. Maybe just multiply backroom prices by 10x the current price and call it a day. Kicking people out of the backroom periodically just feels like something that will be skirted. If there is no incentive to be there, they likely won't be.

I have to make a correction here: Most gem shops do have backroom tables. Major cities do: Landing, Icemule, Solhaven, River's Rest, Ta'Illistim and Ta'Vaalor, Kraken's Fall, Teras, Zul Logoth. I don't know about the Caravansaries, Pinefar, Sylvarraend, or Cysaegir, but the major ones yes, because I shop them frequently for rare-ish materials for alterations.
Gem shops as it stands have a maximum amount - 50k. They just won't buy anything over that amount JUST for 50k.
Wee Sleepy Gnomette's player
From nearby, you hear Vyrshkana yell, "Why I's still drunkifyinged!"
Zicune yells, "Phenomenal cosmic liquir!"
Zicune yells, "Itty bitty drinker!"

Problem is that for some players, silvers are about obsolete and even they took a xxx million hit by buying every Enhancive, its far from a game changer. Its rare that I even look anymore because ALL pawnshops seem to be worked over for any time of enhancive and its not worth the time.
I feel the original posters pain as I used to enjoy checking now and then and finding something useful possibly for a character, but everything worth anything can actually be sold in shop for resale or profit almost from what Pawnshop sells it back for. Plus, with all the ;sloot sellers not wanting to waste time looking for the diamond in the ruff, one xx million find offsets a month worth of purchases.
I do not think its viable but if you limited the Pawn Shop purchase for Enhancives to like 1 per 24 hours per account, it would make one think twice and more than likely not camp. I suspect this requires just a ton of coding and more than likely not happen...plus do you make a Black Crystal count as an item in that window?
Scorched Earth Solution: Increase all stats on future enhancive hunt finds and increase drop rates of said items :) Do this every 4 months to offset hoarding...there would be no tears from this move either.
So many good changes to this game over last few years, glad to be back and trying to catch up with it all.
